Drew Hancock's science fiction thriller Companion did pretty well with audiences as it explored the complexities of science and how bent morals can lead to devastating outcomes. The film revolves around a companion robot, Iris, owned by a human, Josh, who uses her powers and authority over her in immoral ways.
Revolving around a murder and the chase after a million dollars, the plot follows as more characters are revealed to be robots and we come to terms with the brutality they face at the hands of their humans.
Iris escapes the clutches of Josh and steals all the money he was after as she sets on to start life afresh. However, a mid-credit scene shows Iris as she comes across another woman who looks just like her after her escape.
Having given up her false human skin, Iris raises her robotic arm to wave at the woman. This scene has become a topic of speculation, as fans wonder what it signifies. Is Iris actually really free? Is this an Easter Egg for a sequel? Here's what director Hancock had to say.
Speaking to The Wrap, Drew Hancock talked about how the film's ending is more complicated than Iris just driving off. He added,
She still has a tracking chip in her hand. She still has Empathix [the robotics company] out there. And I think that was the easiest reminder is just to show that she’s going to go into a world that there are a bunch of other women that look like her and that the world is bigger than this house in the middle of nowhere.
The credits scene does lay down a foundation for a potential sequel where we get to see what Iris ends up doing after achieving freedom and if she becomes anyone's companion robot again.
In an interview with Variety, Hancock also says,
“I knew Jack would be the last man standing, and Iris would win. I didn’t know the mechanics of that. So I had a finely detailed outline for the first half, and then I had a rough, ‘Maybe it goes here, maybe it does this, maybe we end here?’
Is there going to be a sequel for Companion?
So far, No. Drew Hancock has confirmed that Iris' story ends in the film and that's as far as he's willing to take it. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Hancock said,
“Warner Bros. wouldn’t want me to write my sequel. The story of Companion, as far as I see it, is in this movie. That’s as far as I want to take it, for sure."
He is now already on a reboot of Robert Rodriguez’s 1998 sci-fi horror film, The Faculty.
Companion is a powerful portrayal of the relationship between humans and robotic intelligence and the responsibility that comes with the ownership of such powerful creatures at hand.
The world of science fiction is looking ahead, with more and more films exploring the nuanced genre of robots and humans and how the former soon realize their own power and intelligence and break free from the shackles of their owners.
This film is a good addition to the genre, and even if the themes it follows aren't unprecedented, Hancock's storytelling and Sophie Thatcher's portrayal of a companion robot stand out for fans and make it an all the more exciting watch.
