Drew Hancock's Companion features a mid-credits scene that sets up a potential sequel. The film stars Sophie Thatcher as Iris, a "companion" robot meant to accompany human beings to fulfill their interests and needs. She joins Josh (Jack Quaid) for a getaway trip. He tries to implicate her in the murder of a wealthy man while running away with his fortune. However, things get messy soon enough.
The film shows the humans and the robots fighting against each other for their existence. Josh keeps manipulating Iris according to his will until things get out of hand. Iris grows more confident and learns to use her powers to defend herself. Josh keeps stooping lower and lower to use others for his gain. Eventually, it leads him to an ill fate and Iris to a potential freedom as she leaves the house with a lot of money.
After Companion ends, it features a mid-credits scene that leads viewers to speculate on a possible follow-up.
What does the mid-credits scene in Companion mean? Details explored
Companion follows Iris, fighting for free will instead of being used by cruel humans like Josh. She is not the only robot on this getaway trip. There's also Patrick (Lukas Gage). Josh uses their powers to save his skin while manipulating their intelligence and aggression every step of the way. Toward the end, he even turns Iris into an automaton by dropping her intelligence to 0%.
The ending shows Iris gaining full control over her functioning with the help of a bot company worker. She kills Josh and leaves the lavish house with all the money that Josh wanted to steal before. So, she seeks justice against the people who wronged her. Shortly after the credits roll, we get a sneak peek into her immediate future. She starts driving away in an expensive car and lays eyes on the passengers from another car.
Iris sees a woman, near-identical to her. She waves at her with her half-burnt hand that reveals the robotic insides. It shocks the other woman, who might be another advanced robot like her, unaware of her identity. If not, she might just be a woman stuck in a terrible relationship as Iris was with Josh. Regardless, she looks visibly confused by Iris's robotic arm. Iris looks happy as she drives away because she is free from a controlling relationship with Josh.
Will there be a Companion sequel? Answers explored
The mid-credits scene of Companion teases the audience for the next chapter in Iris' life. It leaves room for discussion about her future. Iris leaves the house with a fortune and the ability to fully control herself. So, she might lead a revolution for robots against cruel, manipulative human beings. Her freedom can lead to a bigger search for liberation. She can afford it with all the money she acquires from Sergey.
For all these reasons, a sequel can satisfy the audience who seek closure to her journey. However, it doesn't seem to be on the table, according to the film's writer-director Drew Hancock. He recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the film. When asked about a possible sequel, Hancock said:
"Warner Bros. wouldn’t want me to write my sequel. My sequel would be showing Iris on the side of the road, cutting out her tracking chip. Then you cut to her on a farm that she’s paid for in cash, and she just lives out her life by watching sunsets and gardening. So I don’t think that Warner Bros. wants to make that version of the sequel."
However, he further added,
"I’m open to her [Iris] getting involved in a Terminator 2, Aliens-type escalation and building of the world, but the story of Companion, as far as I see it, is in this movie. That’s as far as I want to take it, for sure."
