When Companion's trailer arrived, we speculated at Soap Central that the opening sequence might not be real; turns out, we were right. The film had some amazing twists and turns that brought the robots to a more human light, where they turned out to be more human than humans.
The film's trailer already revealed that Iris (Sophie Thatcher) will kill Josh (Jack Quaid). He seemed to be a decent guy but he is not, and that is essentially the reason she kills whom she loved more than anything in the world. Interestingly, he does what many do in relationships, which is using their partners, but that escalates to a whole new level here.
The plot revolves around these three couples who are seemingly chilling in a lake house. But what's actually chilling is that a couple of friends are into killing, specifically Sergey (Rupert Friend).

Iris killed Josh because he was no longer Josh
It is all a setup: the vacation, Sergey forcing Iris into making love, and more. This is slowly revealed in Companion as the story advances, where Josh reveals to Iris that she is nothing but a companion robot. Whatever memory of her was with Josh was artificially created and fed to her brain, or CPU, whatever was in there.
Josh and Iris are at Sergey's lake house with Kat (Megan Suri), Eli (Harvey Guillén), and Patrick (Lukas Gage). Kat and Josh are actually planning to kill Sergey for his stash of cash worth $12 million and put the blame on Iris. However, things didn't really go according to plan as Iris escaped somehow.
Interestingly, Iris' artificial intelligence can be controlled and enhanced via Josh's phone, which she enhances from now 40 percent to 100 percent. Josh later catches her with the help of Patrick, who is also revealed to be a companion robot.
He sets up a date with her, telling why he did what he did, ranting about his life, how lonely he is, and how unfair life has been to him. He then reduces the companion robot's artificial intelligence to zero and orders her to shoot herself.
She is later rebooted by the company that created her, which gives her a second chance to put an electric corkscrew in Josh’s temple. Her memory of Josh was different than what she experienced, so, in a way, it wasn't the Josh she killed, but a different one.
Seems like Jack Quaid was inspired a lot by Homelander (Antony Starr) from The Boys.
Simply put, Josh was pathetic. And Jack Quaid nailed it.
Who was her lookalike in Companion?
This can be quite confusing but not so much. So there's a post-credits scene in Companion where Iris is seen waving hands at another woman who resembles her appearance. Given that her hand's skin (or coating) was burnt (again, thanks to Josh), we can see a metallic skeleton.
By the looks of it, this is setting up a sequel. The new girl is sitting with seemingly an aggressive man talking on the phone, indicating that the girl might suffer in life, Iris. From what we have witnessed, she too is a companion bot like Iris. Maybe a Terminator-like rise of machines is ahead.
All in all, Iris, despite being a robot, succumbed to free will and she did get free from the human monster she loved.
