Chemical Hearts is a simple yet effective love story of two young people falling for each other. Slowly, they realize that love is not easy and fairytale-ish as we think. Grace meets Henry when she is grieving the loss of her boyfriend. The two fall for each other, but Henry realizes that Grace still loves her dead boyfriend, Dom.

One day, Henry finds her weeping in grief in a wedding dress she was supposed to wear on her big day. The two eventually part ways and meet on the last day of school. Grace decides to take a year off to get herself better.

She then puts the poem Henry had written for her back into his pocket. Henry had put it on Dom's grave, which she found. The poem was read to Grace by Henry on the day they met. Before leaving, Grace said that the two had fallen in love with each other, and it meant something. Simply because they didn't end up together doesn't mean it was for nothing.

Henry is sad and heartbroken as he realizes that loving someone is not easy. Meanwhile, Grace seeks time to heal herself from the trauma.
