In an official statement, the Oscar award-winning director Errol Morris said,
“I’ve found myself trapped in a number of different true-crime stories, and the Manson murders are peculiar. You could encapsulate the mystery in just one question: How is it that Manson managed to convince the people around him that killing was okay?”
In an interview with Rolling Stones, Morris revealed that he had met Manson in prison when he was a student of graduation. He said,
“Everybody was aware of this case. It’s one of the most famous cases in American history, if not world history. And a lot of people, including myself, had read more than one book about it."
Talking about the book the film is based on, Morris said:
“I’ve probably read [Chaos] more times than I would like to admit. Reading Tom’s book, knowing Tom, and interviewing Tom has been an experience in and of itself. It’s a very odd thing to say but true: Tom’s book has caused me to reflect on the nature of investigations and the nature of truth.”
