Caught Stealing: Release date, plot, cast and more about the upcoming crime thriller starring Austin Butler

Caught Stealing is a forthcoming film in the realm of crime thrillers and helmed by Darren Aronofsky. Based on the namesake book written by Charlie Huston, the film was written by Huston himself. Aronofksy has produced the film with Ari Handel.

The film stars Austin Butler in the lead role along with several other actors appearing in supporting roles. Caught Stealing is set to release on August 29, 2025. The official synopsis of the film reads:

"Burned-out ex-baseball player Hank Thompson unexpectedly finds himself embroiled in a dangerous struggle for survival amidst the criminal underbelly of 1990s New York City, forced to navigate a treacherous underworld he never imagined."

Caught Stealing will be released on August 29, 2025, by Sony Pictures Releasing. Information regarding its streaming release is not known. Aronofsky's last directorial venture was The Whale which came out in 2022. In an interview with Deadline in 2024, Sony Pictures CEO, Tom Rothman, spoke about the film and called it Aronofsky's most commercial film. He said:

“Darren Aronofsky’s next film with Austin Butler, which is Darren’s most commercial entry ever. And he and Austin are very, very fired up about it. It’s called Caught Stealing, based on a cool book, an action thriller with a signature director to elevate it.”

What is the plot of Caught Stealing?

Caught Stealing is set in the 1990s in New York and follows Hank Thompson, who was a famous basketball player in his hay days. He is pulled into the criminal world of that city which forces him to make certain choices. Huston, who wrote the book it is based on, has also written the screenplay.

The film was announced in March 2024. Aronofsky spoke to Variety about it and said:

“Excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin and my family of NYC filmmakers.”

Who is in the cast of Caught Stealing?

The film stars Austin Butler as Hank Thompson, an ex-basketball player. Butler was last seen in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two where he portrayed Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. The film and his performance were well received. He is also doing Eddington which is a western dark comedy film.

Zoë Kravitz is playing the role of Yvonne. In 2024, she directed, acted, co-produced, and wrote the thriller film, Blink Twice, starring Channing Tatum. Caught Stealing also has Regina King playing Roman. The actress received praise for her portrayal of Shirley Chisolm in the biographical period film, Shirley. English actor, Matt Smith, is also in the film's cast as Russ. He is mostly known for his role as Daemon Targaryen in HBO's House of the Dragon.
