The Avengers essentially disbanded after the Civil War, and now that Captain America: Brave New World, the film's sequel, is here, we ought to look for the original ones, especially considering that the upcoming Avengers movies are nearing. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for next year, and Avengers: Secret Wars for 2027.
It was 2019 (2023 in the MCU timeline) when we last saw them together, and last we checked, an all-out war was raging between Thanos' army and the number of Avengers; one cannot simply count on fingers. That portal scene came out just fine, even though the original vision never came to fruition.
Captain America: Brave New World doesn't confirm the timeline, but it is likely that the events are happening in the MCU's year 2026 or like 2027. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) has been carrying the shield for a couple of years now, and given that he first picked it up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), it's clear what year we are in, as the series takes place in 2024 as per the MCU timeline.
We say 2027 as Ross has been well into 100 days as a president, and if we link it to the real world, elections happen in November only.
So, let's see where our original heroes are in the MCU's year 2026. Or 2027.
What's happening with the Avengers now?
Sorry, though there's nothing like 'The Avengers' now, but that's a force of habit now. But the members of the original team were nowhere to be found in Captain America: Brave New World. A few were hopeful that Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) might appear to face off against his Red counterpart; he didn't.
As we have mentioned him, let's start with him only. The last time we saw him, he introduced his son, Skaar, following his return from Sakaar in She-Hulk, which takes place in the MCU's year 2025. Ruffalo has confirmed that the character is there in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future, but there's no standalone movie for him. Skaar could be a part of the Young Avengers. So, Banner might just be spending time with him.
Next up, there's Thor (Chris Hemsworth), whom we last saw in Thor: Love and Thunder, where he lost another one; this time, it was Jane Foster. There are rumors for the fifth Thor film, but there's no confirmation of it. As far as we can say, he is still a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy as Captain America: Brave New World wraps up.
Hawkeye was last seen in Hawkeye (2021), which takes place in the MCU's year 2024. He brought home "a couple of strays" for Christmas. He has gone through a lot. So, it is likely that he is with the family in Captain America: Brave New World while also training Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), one of those strays he brought alongside him to stay with his family.
Then we have our very own Captain America, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). While the world believes he is no more, Anthony Mackie hinted during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he is still very much alive. That said, it appears like Cap is enjoying his retirement in Captain America: Brave New World. Or maybe he joined the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, where Sam Wilson worked in The Winter Soldier.
And no, we are not forgetting Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). They are the only ones whose status we can confirm. We saved them for last, as we know they are both watching the remaining Avengers from above.
So what happens after Captain America: Brave New World now?
What we can deduce after how things ended up in Captain America: Brave New World is that the original Avengers will likely appear in one of the future Avengers movies; they have to, given that "the others" are coming.
The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson) has already hinted at this threat which is likely to pop up in Secret Wars. Though Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed to return, it is as Victor Von Doom. We have only half of the original Avengers remaining, who still have what it takes to stand in a battle.
Some theories suggest that the Avengers might get a soft reboot where new actors will take up the mantle of the team members, including Tony and Natasha. Let's just hope that never happens, ever.
