Fassbender’s portrayal of David's character became an important element of the Prometheus and Covenant story, but his character's fate and journey were left unplanned or somewhat unresolved.

With the new Alien projects coming up, fans speculate that there could be a number of ways to bring back Fassbender’s David, even though his return is not yet guaranteed.

Here's an exploration of how Alien: Romulus 2 could play the base as the perfect opportunity for Michael Fassbender’s David's return to the beloved franchise.

David’s Absence Since Alien: Covenant

Michael Fassbender plays the character David, who was last seen in Alien: Covenant, released in 2017. David, as a character, was portrayed as a bright yet psychotic android, and this made him out to be one of the most intricate rivals in the series.

The film ended with David secretly following up with his menacing experiments with the black goo on board the Covenant ship on the way to Origae-6. However, his final real intentions and the consequences of his experiments remain anonymous.

Even though Ridley Scott, who is the director of Prometheus and Covenant, insinuated the continuation of David’s storyline, due to the performance of Covenant at the box office, the plans of bringing him back had to be pushed back.

Could David Return in Alien: Romulus 2?

The recent success of Alien: Romulus could currently be opening up the gates for a possible Alien: Romulus 2 sequel, because of which many fans think that the film could possibly bring back Fassbender’s character.

The most exciting bridge to fill this gap is the black goo, something that is an important element in Prometheus and Covenant—which also had a significant role to play in Alien: Romulus. Over here, then, Alien: Romulus 2 could journey through David’s search for samples of the substance.

By the end of Alien: Romulus, it is known that the Corbelan ship still held some remains of the black goo. Given David’s fixation with the substance for running and causing his experiments, it’s highly conceivable that he may hunt down the Corbelan in search of new materials. This could be a possible plot that can be explored in Alien: Romulus 2, making it easier for David to return to the franchise.

Other Possibilities for David’s Return

If at all Alien: Romulus 2 does not end up bringing David back, fans also think that there might still be a chance for him to appear in Alien: Earth, which is an upcoming FX series. The show will take place two years before the original Alien film and look into how xenomorphs first arrived on Earth.

Fans speculate that it could be David who might have sent the ship that crash-landed on Earth, which triggered the xenomorph invasion, which has already been mentioned in the synopsis of the series.

The show could perfectly intertwine with the events as seen in Prometheus and Covenant, which could probably offer a way to reintroduce David’s influence without overwhelming the new planned storyline.

With Alien: Romulus 2 and Alien: Earth coming up, there are two listed possibilities in which Michael Fassbender's character David could return.

However, the return as of yet remains officially unannounced.
