The mainline Fast & Furious franchise might finally come to a halt after Fast X: Part 2, but that might not be the case for spin-offs. However, the question remains if Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto, who has gained a massive fandom as a family guy, will survive the final act in the story.
While we are seeing Hobbs' story building in one timeline, Toretto's is ending at the same time. Diesel already confirmed last year that it will be a grand finale. Maybe he survives and runs off to live a normal life, never to be seen again, but that surely will be the last.
Also, it was a goodbye to Dante Reyes too, given that the final film is said to be going back to its roots and might feature a new villain, according to one industry insider, Jeff Sneider. That said, it will be "one last job" for Toretto.
What should be a proper farewell to Diesel's character?
Dominic Toretto may die. Or he may retire, and then, the family lived happily thereafter. It works both ways. We have come to a point in this saga that Fast X: Part 2 simply needs to wrap things up for good as this universe keeps expanding. At first, it was a street-level story, and time flew by (and cars too) as things went into space.
Eventually, things came back to where they began and that is what Vin Diesel wanted. He explained this in one of his Instagram posts too. After explaining what others want in the post, he went on to explain, writing that,
"I just want to get back to real street racing, practical stunts… and a reunion of that beautiful brotherhood."
That said, he may end up dying in one last race in Fast X: Part 2, lost to speed, much like Christian Bale's portrayal of Ken Miles in Ford v Ferrari. That reminds us of that beautiful quote Matt Damon's Carroll Shelby says,
"There's a point at 7,000 RPM where everything fades. The machine becomes weightless. It disappears. All that's left is a body moving through space and time. 7,000 RPM. That's where you meet it."
But then we are happy with Dom eventually retiring, being the family guy he always was.
Fast X: Part 2 is less a farewell to Dom and more to Brian
For many, the Fast & Furious saga ended in 2013 only, when Paul Walker, who played Brian O'Conner in the series, met his untimely demise. While we saw him being a speedster in the films, it was the speed that eventually led to his death.
But it wasn't the end for the film members, as they clearly had more plans with the leading man of the franchise. But nothing could be done, and now Fast X: Part 2 will serve as the proper farewell to Paul.
Vin Diesel said something during one interview before Fast X's release that makes it more evident. He told Total Films magazine that
"I will give you this without spoiling anything: I couldn’t imagine this saga ending without truly saying goodbye to Brian O’Conner."
And what's better than going back to where it all began? They joined the ride together in Los Angeles and now it will be where it all ends.
For all we know from another of Diesel's posts, the rest of Fast X: Part 2 will wrap things up in Los Angeles only.
