Speeds must not go below 100 km/h or the screen might experience a bullet train explosion. Well, that's one of the details from the upcoming remake of 1975's Japanese film The Bullet Train. Shinji Higuchi, who directed Shin Godzilla (2016) and Shin Ultraman (2022), is the director of Bullet Train Explosion, so we can expect another visual spectacle from this one.
What makes it more interesting is that real bullet trains were used in the film, thanks to East Japan Railway Company. It's clear from the trailer that once the passengers have boarded, they will be in for an explosive ride, though let's hope the explosion is prevented.
The film is set for release next month and will be available to stream on Netflix. As for the cast, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (Midnight Swan), Rena Nonen (Amachan), Takumi Saitoh (Shin Ultraman), and more will appear in Bullet Train Explosion.
When is Bullet Train Explosion releasing?
Bullet Train Explosion will release on April 23, 2025, distributed by Netflix. That said, the film has joined the streaming media company's Japanese release slate, where Last Samurai Standing and Alice in Borderland are among the anticipated films this year.
Where will Bullet Train Explosion be streaming?
The film will exclusively be available on Netflix. As for now, no other platforms appear to be in sight to stream this explosive flick.
Who is playing whom in the film?
Netflix has confirmed the film's cast, where Tsuyoshi Kusanagi is the train's conductor, Kazuya Takaichi, who first announces what's going on the train. That is sure to bring panic among the passengers, as we can see in the available trailer. Apart from being an actor appearing in films like The Hotel Venus (2004), Attack on Titan (2015), and more, Kusanagi is a singer too.
There's another conductor in there, Keiji Fujii, whom Kanata Hosoda will be portraying. She has mainly appeared in TV series, where her notable roles include Junpei Sagara in Love is Phantom (2021) and Yoji Minamimaru in Land of Tanabata (2024).
Rena Nonen, who is also known as Non, is the train's driver, Chika Matsumoto, in the film and is known for her portrayal of Aki Amano in Amachan (2013).
Other than them, Jun Kaname is playing a YouTuber dubbed Mitsuru Todoroki (let's see if he goes live on the train), Machiko Ono is a government official called Yuko Kagami, and Hana Toyoshima is a student called Yuzuki Onodera.
More actors are in there but their roles weren't revealed so we will just mention their names below.
- Daisuke Kuroda
- Satoshi Matsuo
- Suzuka Ohgo
- Matsuya Onoe
- Naomasa Musaka
- Pierre Taki
- Yajuro Bando
- Takumi Saito
What is Bullet Train Explosion about?
Similar to the case in The Bullet Train, whoever has planted the bomb here is making things more tense; he insists on the train moving at 100 km/h at least.
Here's the official plot provided by Netflix to give you more clarity over the movie.
"A tense phone call came into the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center. The caller claims that a bomb has been planted on the Hayabusa No. 60 bound for Tokyo, and that the bomb will explode as soon as the speed of the Shinkansen train drops below 100 km/h. The caller demands 100 billion yen in ransom money to disarm the bomb."
