Samara Weaving will deal with a gatecrasher in the new comedy thriller, Borderline, which also features Ray Nicholson, Eric Dane, and Jimmy Fails, among others. Magnet Releasing recently dropped the film's trailer and it looks dark but funny.
The film marks the directorial debut of Jimmy Warden, who earlier wrote Cocaine Bear, which was received well by the fans and critics in 2023. Warden, who has also penned the script of Borderline, wrote the 2020 film, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and is scripting Naughty, an upcoming film directed by Olivia Wilde.
Margot Robbie co-founded LuckyChap Entertainment has produced Bordeline along with and Productivity Media. The film's principal photography took place in Vancouver, Canada, although Warden has said that the story is set in '90s Los Angeles.
A Deadline report says Borderline was first mentioned in The Black List 2020 with a brief premise outlining the film's story, about a bodyguard protecting a pop star and her boyfriend.
Everything we know about Borderline
When is Borderline releasing?
If the poster looks kind of funny — like Samara Weaving asking her annoyed-self, "who the hell is this guy?" — that could likely to be the story's essence, which we will get to know upon the film's release.
Talking about the release, the film is scheduled to open a month after Valentine's Day, on March 14, 2025, and will be available in theaters and on digital platforms.
The cast of Borderline
In the lead of in Borderline, we have Samara Weaving as a pop star named Sofia, who finds herself trapped in her own house. Many may not know this but Weaving is married to the film's director Jeremy Warden. The two first him met on the set of The Babysitter.
Then there's Ray Nicholson — yeah, you guessed it — Jack Nicholson's son who plays Duerson, an intruder and an obsessed stalker of the pop star. Ray Nicholson's breakthrough came with Smile 2 (2024), where his grin left many fans with a The Shining nostalgia.
Here are the others set to appear in the film:
- Eric Dane as Bell
- Jimmie Fails as Rhodes
- Alba Baptista as Penny
- Catherine Lough Haggquist
- Patrick Cox as J H.
- Terence Kelly as Lutzner
- Matthew Del Bel Belluz as Officer Carter
- Yasmeen Kelders as Abby
Billy Magnussen, who has appeared in films like The Big Short (2015), No Time to Die (2021), and Road House (2024), is in the film, too.
What is the film about?
The film is about a pop star who finds an intruder in her house and the chaos that ensues. The official synopsis, as featured on Indiewire, makes it more clear:
"Borderline’ is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that follows a dangerously persistent stalker (Nicholson) who invades the home of a ‘90s pop superstar (Weaving) with grand delusions of a wedding. With her life on the line and help from her loyal bodyguard, she must escape the stalker’s sinister grip before they tie the knot."
The trailer too gives a look at what fans might expects. Weaving appears sort of stunned when she first encounters Nicholson's character. Her late reaction reminds us of the time when Wile E. Coyote from Looney Tunes forgets he has crossed a cliff and won't fall until he realizes that!
