Black Bag hits a new milestone with its RT scores and here's what we know about the record-breaking movie

Black Bag continues to be well received by viewers. The spy thriller is penned by David Koepp and helmed by Steven Soderbergh. It was released on March 14, 2025, by Focus Features and received positive critical response.

Black Bag has managed to break several records on Rotten Tomatoes. It is enjoying a score of 97%, making it the best-rated film on the site by Soderbergh. The official synopsis reads,

"When intelligence agent Kathryn Woodhouse is suspected of betraying the nation, her husband - also a legendary agent - faces the ultimate test of whether to be loyal to his marriage, or his country."

Black Bag has emerged as the best-rated Steven Soderbergh film on Rotten Tomatoes, beating his debut feature. Besides him, the film has also become a best-rated flick for Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, and Marisa Abela, among others in the cast crew. If we include all the names from the team, the tally of records attributed to Black Bag stands at 15. It also ties in with Pierce Brosnan's best-rated film, The Long Good Friday.

The producers of Black Bag include Gregory Jacobs and Casey Silver. The film revolves around Kathryn St. Jean and George Woodhouse, a couple working for intelligence. George begins suspecting that his wife is responsible for a crucial leak of information to a Russian. The story eventually unravels a larger conspiracy. It was first released on March 12, 2025, in France and subsequently in the United States on March 14 by Focus Features.

Soderbergh gave an interview to Variety where he spoke about tackling the spy genre with Black Bag. He said,

"David [Koepp] found a way to keep it fresh. He found a way to differentiate it by going kind of narrow and deep on the character work, as opposed to let’s turn it into an action spectacle. It’s an emotional, psychological spectacle. The trick of coming up with a good story is to have it conclude in a way that is surprising but inevitable. That’s tricky. Sometimes you can surprise people, but it doesn’t feel right or it doesn’t feel organic. But if it’s too telegraphed, then they’re not surprised and they’re not pleased, right?"

In the same interview, Soderbergh also spoke about making a mid-budget film like Black Bag for adults. He said that no one is doing that.

"These are the kinds of movies that I’ve made my career on. I would like for the movie to work, not just for my own benefit, but for the benefit of the next person who wants to make one of these. I don’t want to be used as an example against a filmmaker of why we stopped doing this type of movie."
