What is the plot for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?
Picking up way after the 1988 prequel, the Deetz’s are back with a more haunting ordeal with a favorite poltergeist: Betelgeuse. Lydia Deetz is now a credible psychic and is famous for her show, ‘Ghost House,’ amassing some pretty bucks.
Similarly, her mother, Delia Deetz, also accomplished her dream of opening an art gallery for her expressive craft - The Human Canvas. Although Delia and Lydia have a functional mother-daughter relationship, it’s the complete opposite with Lydia’s daughter Astrid because of her mom’s job.
The story is set in the aftermath of Charles’ (Astrid’s grandfather) death due to a shark attack, which causes a Deetz reunion at the Winter River mansion. Cue the afterlife: Beetlejuice’s ex-wife, Deruns, runs rampant in the afterlife to seek revenge on her ex-husband.
Meanwhile, at his rather emotional funeral, Rory (Lydia’s boyfriend) asks her to marry him on Halloween (two days after the demise). A suspicious Astrid journies to uncover the truth about the afterlife where her father, who runs a call center in the underworld lives.
However, she’s not alone and is joined by an unlikely ally who turns out to be the Deetz’ worst nightmare in addition to Delores. With Astrid in dangerous cahoots, Lydia, Beetlejuice, Delia, and others join forces to rescue her and restore balance in the paranormal.
Why aren't Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?
Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis played the couple, Adam and Barbara Maitland - the ghost who could not move on. Neither Baldwin nor Davis made an appearance, leaving fans to wonder about their fate. In the movie, Ryder’s character spilled the beans about what became of the Maitlands.
She revealed that after years of waiting, the Maitlands stumbled on a “loophole” that enabled them to escape their intertwined fate and return to the house. Whether or not they found themselves in the Great Beyond remains up to speculation.
Speaking to People about not including Baldwin and Davis in the movie, Director Tim Burton said,
“Even though they (the Maitlands) were such an integral part of the first one, I was focusing on something else.”
Burton and other show co-creators attributed their absence to time and relevance being a primary factor in the sequel.
