Becoming Led Zeppelin is an upcoming documentary film that chronicles how Led Zeppelin became a major rock band. Bernard MacMohan is the director and has also written it with Allison McGourty. Its work-in-progress version was screened at the 2021 Venice Film Festival and is slated to be released in February 2025.
The official logline of the film reads:
"The film traces the journeys of the four members of the Stairway To Heaven rockers through the music scene of the 1960s and their meeting in the summer of 1968, culminating in 1970."
When will Becoming Led Zeppelin be released?
Becoming Led Zeppelin had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. Despite the makers showing a work-in-progress, the film received a standing ovation from the audience that lasted for nearly ten minutes.
The film is expected to be released on February 7, 2025, in Canada and in the United States of America on IMAX. It will see a release in nearly 200 theaters in both countries. Prior to that, on February 5, there will be an early access screening of the film.
What is the plot of Becoming Led Zeppelin?
Becoming Led Zeppelin is the first film that the band itself has officially sanctioned. This means that the makers got cooperation from the band members. The film explores all the band members, including Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham, as they formed Led Zeppelin in the 1960s.
The film consists of interviews with all the cast members. John Bonham's (who passed away in 1980) voice recordings have been used in the film to show his point of view. His recordings had not been heard before this film.
Who is in the cast of Becoming Led Zeppelin?
Becoming Led Zeppelin features all of the band's cast members. This includes Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. John Bonham's voice recordings have been used in the film. The members will be shown through their real-life interviews as well as archival footage from the past.
In an interview with Variety, MacMahon spoke about making the first officially sanctioned film on the subject. He said,
“Becoming Led Zeppelin’ is a film that no one thought could be made. The band’s meteoric rise to stardom was swift and virtually undocumented. Through an intense search across the globe and years of restoration of the visual and audio archive found, this story is finally able to be told.”
During the announcement of the film, Page complimented the film's director and said,
“When I saw everything Bernard had done both visually and sonically on the remarkable achievement that is ‘American Epic,’ I knew he would be qualified to tell our story.”
Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968 in London, and its music was influential in that it was credited for paving the way for heavy metal and hard rock. At one point, they were the best-selling artists of all time and are a part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite their success and influence, the journey of this band was hardly documented. Some of their popular songs include "The Immigrant Song" and "Stairway to Heaven."
