Becoming Led Zeppelin will be released in theaters on February 7, 2025. The documentary will take fans inside the legendary British rock band's early days. This is the first time Led Zeppelin has agreed to appear in a biographical film about their history. Bernard MacMahon directed the project, and the band fully cooperated.
The film focuses on how Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham came together in the late 1960s. It follows their journey through the music scene and ends with their rise to the top of the charts in 1970. The story is told in the band’s own words. Bonham’s voice comes through rare audio recordings, and fans can expect never-before-seen concert footage and personal archives.
Where can you watch Becoming Led Zeppelin?
Fans in the United States and Canada can watch it in IMAX for a more immersive experience highlighting the band’s larger-than-life performances. The documentary will also play in standard theaters across North America, giving fans multiple viewing options.
For those eager to see it before the official release, early access screenings will occur on February 5 in select cities. IMAX is hosting these early showings in 18 markets, allowing fans to experience the film two days before its wide release.
Regal Cinemas has already listed early access screenings at Seattle, Nashville, Warrington, and Charlottesville locations. Tickets for early access and the February 7 release are already available at participating theaters. Additional locations may be added in the weeks leading up to the premiere.
What is Becoming Led Zeppelin about?
Becoming Led Zeppelin retraces the origins of one of rock’s most formidable bands and unpacks how Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham converged in 1968 to form a group that would soon dominate the music world.
The documentary bypasses the band’s later chapters and zeroes in on their inception, early recordings, and the whirlwind ascent that crowned them the world’s preeminent rock act by 1970. It steers clear of sensationalism and focuses firmly on the music that defined their legacy.
Bonham, who died in 1980, is included through unheard audio interviews, giving fans a rare chance to hear the band members reflect on their own experiences instead of having outsiders tell their stories.
Fans will also see never-before-seen footage from their early concerts in the U.S. and the UK, along with full performances and rare material from the band’s archives, all restored using custom techniques to make them look and sound as fresh as possible on the big screen.
Director Bernard MacMahon spent five years putting the film together with writer-producer Allison McGourty, searching basements, attics, and private collections to track down rare recordings, photos, and videos most fans have never seen.
The project caught the attention of Robert Plant, who was impressed by MacMahon’s 2017 documentary American Epic about early American roots music. The connection convinced the band to finally open up and share their story. Jimmy Page also supported the idea and praised the filmmakers for focusing on the music rather than sensationalizing the band’s personal lives.
Becoming Led Zeppelin debuted as a work-in-progress at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, earning a prolonged ten-minute standing ovation. Critics commended its rare and striking footage but observed that it leans heavily on the band’s viewpoint. After enduring years of delays, the finalized version is now primed for release.
Select cities will host early access showings on February 5, and die-hard fans will have an exclusive opportunity to immerse themselves in the band’s formative years on the big screen.
