While many believed Disney+'s Loki was Tom Hiddleston's last outing as the God of Mischief in the MCU, the latest cast announcement for Avengers: Doomsday revealed otherwise.
Marvel finally announced the cast for its upcoming Doomsday movie through a live stream on their YouTube channel on March 26, 2025, and fans were elated to discover Hiddleston as one of the cast members. The actor was previously rumored to be a part of the upcoming project.
While including Loki in the upcoming project would make sense since he is currently the most powerful God in the Multiverse, after the events of Loki Season 2, fans wondered if the MCU would resurrect him after the spin-off's finale.
The Season 2 finale saw Loki transform from a villain to a hero. He realized his glorious purpose and sacrificed himself to bring order to the timelines and the Multiverse. He became the eternal God of Stories, sitting on his throne at the End of Time.
Here is everything about Loki's resurrection in the MCU and his potential role in Avengers: Doomsday.
Loki has been synonymous with death and resurrection. Exploring the character's possible role in Avengers: Doomsday
Loki, the God of Mischief, has been synonymous with death and resurrection in the MCU. The latest announcement about the character's addition in Avengers: Doomsday hints that the franchise believes in the character's powers and popularity.
While many fans would believe that Loki has died multiple times in the MCU, most of these deaths were fake and a ruse created by the trickster for his brother and father. However, the character finally met his end in Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos snaps his neck in front of his brother Thor, a painful scene in the character's journey. Thanos' cruel words to Loki were:
"No more resurrections."
While the statement proved true and the Loki who existed in Infinity War died for real, fans met another variant in Disney+'s Loki series, the one who escaped during the time heist in Avengers: Endgame.
During Endgame, all the Avengers assembled to travel back in time and plan a time heist. During this heist, Loki escaped with the Tesseract, the Space Stone, and thus never met his end in Infinity War.
This version of Loki is the one we meet in Disney+'s Loki series, who created a breach in the timeline, and hence, the Time Variance Authority was after him and wanted to capture him in the spin-off series.
Since Infinity War Loki is still dead, it is likely that the version we saw in the Loki Season 2 finale will be resurrected in Avengers: Doomsday, which will hit theatres on May 1, 2026.
Will Avengers: Doomsday finally give a brotherly reunion to Thor and Loki?
While fans are curious to know how Avengers: Doomsday will resurrect the God of Mischief for the upcoming movie since his journey seemed final in Season 2, there is another event to look forward to.
In addition to Hiddleston, MCU also announced that Chris Hemsworth will appear in Doomsday, and fans cannot help but wonder if we will finally get a brotherly reunion in the new movie.
The last time these brothers met was in Infinity War, where Thor saw Thanos snap his brother's neck. The painful witnessing of his brother's death put him in a slump, which he later recovered from in Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder.
To think that Thor is unaware of Disney+'s Loki variant and that his brother is still alive opens up many opportunities for a happy reunion in Doomsday. It would surely be interesting to see how Thor reacts after he realizes that his brother has transformed into the God of Stories and Time, and actually has all of the multiverse in his hands.
