The recent allegations against Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) and Diddy (Sean Combs) filed in a lawsuit for allegedly r*ping a 13-year-old in 2000 have put their friendship in the spotlight.
After Jay-Z was named in the ongoing lawsuit his attorney seemingly distanced his client away from Diddy. However, according to a CNN report, the duo did share a decades-long friendship that dates back to the 90s.
Both Jay-Z and Diddy were raised by single mothers in New York. They founded the record labels – Bad Boy Records and Roc Nation helping various other artists in launching their careers.
From rap collaborations to sharing the same stage at events, their friendship has reportedly evolved with time. Here is the timeline of their friendship over the years.

According to multiple reports, Jay-Z and Diddy did share a close bond.
1990s
Jay-Z and Diddy first crossed paths in 1997. They collaborated on the track, I Love You Baby, which belonged to Diddy’s debut album, No Way Out. The album was a tribute to the death of their mutual friend and Combs’ protege Christopher “Notorious B.I.G” Wallace. Later the same year, the duo collaborated on Jay-Z’s second album, My Lifetime, Vol 1. Album. In 1999, the rappers collaborated again for Do You Like It…Do You Want It from Comb’s second album, Forever.
2000s
Not only Jay-Z, but Beyonce also collaborated with Diddy for the track Summertime which featured as the B-side of her popular track Crazy In Love. The hit song was a part of her debut solo album Dangerously In Love, released in 2003.
In 2005, Diddy and Jay-Z jointly contributed $1 million during a televised telethon after Hurricane Katrina caused massive devastation in New Orleans.
In August 2007, Jay-Z and Diddy performed together at the Screamfest festival at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event included a lineup of prominent artists including 50 Cent, T.I., and Kanye West. An incident from the event went viral when Diddy reportedly playfully slapped Jay-Z twice on the backside.
In 2009, per The Independent, when Diddy was interviewed about an old photograph of himself with Jay-Z. He said that it was from one of his birthday parties.
“He was on tour, and he flew in private after one of his shows just to come to that party. Then he had to fly back out. I was just telling him how much I appreciated it and how much I value our friendship.” The rapper said.
2010s
Both Diddy and Jay-Z made it to the Forbes magazine’s hip-hop-rich list in 2010. Jay-Z stood at first place with $63 million while Diddy got second place with $30 million. In 2012, Diddy landed in first place with $550 million and Jay-Z was in second place with $460 million, according to a report in The Independent.
In 2016, during the Puff Daddy and The Family Bad Boy Reunion Tour, Diddy referred to Jay-Z as an “extended family” member and his “brother” on whom he could rely when he was in trouble.
“Bad Boy’s celebrating 20 years of hits, but this is extended family. Whenever I get in trouble, this is the one I call. This is my strategist right here. This is my brother!”
2020s
Diddy and Jay-Z celebrated their success together at the Black Billionaire brunch hosted by Roc Nation, per CNN. They were again pictured together on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in April 2022.
However, since Diddy’s homes were raided by federal agents on March 25, 2024, Jay-Z has remained silent about the allegations against his former friend and collaborator.

The recent allegations seem to have strained the relationship between Diddy and Jay-Z. Alex Spiro, the attorney defending Jay-Z, stated that there is "no friendship or longtime bond" in an interview with NBC News.
“Just because they knew each other, know each other, that doesn’t mean anything.” He added.
Reflecting upon the ongoing legal case, he further added that his client, “isn’t going to get shaken down” after he was accused in a civil lawsuit last week.
“This case needs to be dismissed, and Mr Carter’s name needs to be fully cleared,”
Spiro said as he highlighted the lack of any current affiliations with Diddy, who is facing serious charges.
