The screenplay of Animal Farm was written by Nicholas Stoller. His earlier writing credit includes Storks and The Muppets. The producers include Andy Serkis, Dave Rosenbaum, Adam Nagle, and Jonathan Cavendish under the banners of Cinesite, Aniventure, and The Imaginarium Studios. The executive producers include Woody Harrelson and Matt Reeves.
The film is about a group of farm animals who decide to revolt against their human owners and take control. Eventually, they are being controlled by a cunning pig named Napoleon. Their next challenge is to confront him.
Orwell's novella was first adapted in 1954 as an animated film. It later inspired a live-action film that came out in 1999. Serkis is known for his work in the motion-capture and animation field, having given his voice and motion-capture for the Gollum character in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchise. His name is also associated with Caesar in the Planet of the Apes franchise and Kong in King Kong.
In 2023, Serkis gave an interview to Collider to speak about the film. He said,
"Well, obviously it’s a contemporary retelling of George Orwell’s fairytale, as it’s known and is written in the book. It’s a brilliant allegory, and it’s sadly eternally relevant, about absolute power corrupting absolutely. But there is also, in our iteration of it, there is a lot of humor. And the satire is funny, and it’s a family film. It is meant for everybody. So, there are lots of layers to it, and there’s humor for all ages. It’ll be released about this time next year."
Unfortunately, the original release date of the film (as Serkis suggested) has been pushed to 2025. The film will be out on July 11, 2025.
The original novel is seen as an allegory of dictatorship and a totalitarian regime. Orwell mentioned how the book reflected the events of the Russian Revolution and eventually, the era of Joseph Stalin.
