The official synopsis of the plot of Maria reads:

Maria tells the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world's greatest female opera singer, relived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.”

What’s interesting about the film is that it holds the potential to win Jolie an Oscar Nomination. She had previously picked up the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1995 film, Girl, Interrupted.

Jolie admitted that the role was challenging for her as she had to learn to sing. When she had informed the director Larrain that she could sing, she did not know that she would have to take her skills to the next level to nail the role of an opera singer. She mentioned:

“I thought I could sing like people sing in film, you pretend to sing or you sing a little. And it was very clear early on that I was going to really have to learn to sing because you can’t really fake opera.”

Larrain mentioned that when Callas is shown singing in her prime, 95% of what is heard is taken from original recordings. However, when she is portrayed in her old age, the voice used is actually Jolie's.
