Angelina Jolie has stepped into the spotlight once again, this time to bring opera legend Maria Callas to life in Pablo Larrain’s latest film, Maria. During a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, Jolie shared her intense preparation journey, the emotional depth she discovered, and her connection to the character.

Jolie revealed that she underwent nearly seven months of rigorous opera training to prepare for the role. Starting with breathing exercises and posture alignment, she gradually worked on vocal techniques.

She also studied Callas’ teaching recordings, embracing the singer’s disciplined approach to music.

“You don’t think about how you feel or what you want. You understand the composer’s intention, and you practice until you’re ready,” Jolie explained.

Jolie’s role as Maria Callas captures the final days of the opera icon in 1970s Paris. The film, directed by Pablo Larraín, and written by Steven Knight, delves into the tumultuous and tragic yet beautiful life of Callas. Known for his immersive storytelling, Larrain challenged Jolie to approach the role with complete dedication, and she did not disappoint.

Overcoming nerves and gaining confidence

The process was not without its challenges. Jolie admitted feeling “terribly nervous” during her first singing session. Starting in a small room, Jolie eventually performed in grand theater scenes, including those filmed at La Scala in Paris. This gradual progression allowed her to grow into the role.

For Jolie, playing Callas went beyond singing. She connected with the singer’s vulnerability, and her struggle to find emotional freedom in a world that demanded strength and perfection.

“I related to the part of her that was extremely soft,” Jolie said.

She also reflected on the term “diva,” often used to describe Callas. Through this role, Jolie redefined the word as a testament to discipline, excellence, and resilience.

Jolie hopes her performance will inspire a new generation to explore opera. She described opera as a medium that captures immense feelings of love, pain, and despair.

“There’s nothing like it,” she said.

While she grew up listening to punk rock bands like The Clash, Jolie now appreciates opera’s emotional depth.

Maria marks Jolie’s return to the big screen after a three-year hiatus. She explained that she took time off to focus on her family, but felt grateful to be part of the creative process again. This role allowed her to rediscover her passion for storytelling, and the artistry of acting.

While speculation about potential awards for her performance has surfaced, Jolie emphasized her focus on honoring Maria Callas’ legacy and her fans.

“My fear would be to disappoint them,” she admitted.

For Jolie, the real reward lies in doing justice to Callas’ story and inspiring audiences to appreciate her artistry.

Jolie’s portrayal of Maria Callas is not just a performance, it’s a tribute to a woman who redefined what it means to be an artist. Director Pablo Larraín described Callas as a perfectionist who demanded excellence, a trait that often earned her the title of “diva.” Jolie embraced this legacy, showcasing the beauty of Callas’ discipline and passion.
