Companion isn't exactly grotesque, more like Terminator-esque but in a more human way. The film is about this human-size robot, Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who is stuck with humans, which she realizes after her first kill in the film. Josh (Jack Quaid), her boyfriend (at least that's what Iris thought), tells her that she is nothing more than a robot.
Three couples, Josh and Iris; Eli (Harvey Guillén) and Patrick (Lukas Gage); and Sergey (Rupert Friend) and Kat (Megan Suri), are in a lake house where Kat and Josh are planning to kill Sergey to steal his stash of cash and blame Iris for the misdeed.
However, little do they know that this artificial being will escape and somehow reach a high level of intelligence to return as a doom. We see a lot of deaths in the film, most major and a couple of minor ones. We will take a look at the former here.
Major deaths in Companion
Iris finally puts some sense (and a corkscrew) in Josh's brain
Let's begin with the most obvious one. Even the ones who haven't watched Companion yet know that Iris will kill Josh in the film, which is clear from her statement in the trailer. She says,
"There have been two moments in my life when I was happiest. The first, was the day I met Josh. And the second, the day I killed him."
Long story short, Iris comes to her senses and realizes how evil this man is. So she puts an electric corkscrew in his temple so he can come to his senses. Ironic, isn't it?
Sergey is where the killing spree begins
Sergey was the first kill for Iris, which was, interestingly, planned by Josh and Kat in Companion. They knew that Sergey would make advances on Iris and then one thing would lead to another, which it did.
As Sergey forces himself on Iris, the companion robot doesn't have any other option than to defend her from her attacker. Miraculously (not really), she finds a knife in her pocket and stabs him in the neck. Within moments, Sergey is dead.
Eli becomes another case of self-defense for Iris
Eli's fate meets him in the forest when the remaining four head into the forest where Iris has escaped. Before leaving, Ele takes a gun from Sergey's house, just in case. That's the life-changing, more like life-ending, decision he takes.
It's Eli who first captures Iris. Some struggle happens and the companion bot gets the upper hand. While she doesn't intend to kill him but defend herself. And, like with her self-defense against Sergey, she kills him. While she had to stab Sergey, Eli died of a gunshot in his chest.
Patrick turned out to be more human than humans
Patrick is revealed to be another companion robot in the film and is later hacked by Josh to leverage him into killing Iris. There's a moment where Patrick and Eli confess their love for each other but now that Eli is no more in the equation, Patrick doesn't have a reason to live.
He realizes this later in the film. Josh has hacked into his system, turning him into a sort of killing machine. However, the companion bot can break free of the control and decide to end his life.
Kat is a proof of how Karma works
Kat is one character who deserves to die. Karma hits hard, and in the back in this case. Kat is Sergey's love interest in the movie but she plans to betray him for money.
Like she backstabbed Sergey, she was stabbed in the back by Patrick. When she comes to her senses that all of this is wrong, it is too late. And when she tries to leave, Josh orders Patrick to initiate the kill.
