Veronica Roth’s Divergent young adult book series hauls her readers and viewers to a dystopian rendition of Chicago, where the society is arranged around five clear-cut factions, each symbolizing a precise quality.
The people are supposed to surrender their lives to the faction that affiliates with their sturdiest traits. There are five factions, and they include Dauntless: courage, Erudite: intelligence, Abnegation: selflessness, Amity: peace, and Candor: honesty.
At the age of 16, every civilian undertakes an “aptitude test” intended to evaluate their leanings, offering vision into which of the five factions fits them best. However, the final verdict remains the choice of the civilian, made publicly during a “Choosing Ceremony.”.
An important factor of faction assortment is the “Aptitude Test.”. Each candidate is linked to a system that monitors the candidate by the use of electrodes and a specific serum that activates the evaluation.
The Divergent book trilogy that follows Beatrice includes Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. It gained popularity amongst young adult readers, leading to film adaptations starring Shailene Woodley, who plays Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior; Theo James, who plays Four; Ansel Elgort, who plays Caleb Prior, Tris' sibling; and Miles Teller, who portrays the character of Peter Hayes, amongst several others.
Divergent first debuted on screens in 2014, and the second installment of Insurgent premiered in 2015. The third installment, Allegiant, was at first split into two separate films, but after the 2016 release of Allegiant: Part 1, the second part never saw the light of day, leaving fans without a proper conclusion to the dystopian story as far as the films were concerned.
The factions act as a groundwork and both a limitation, influencing the characters in different ways while also seeing through the risks of this dystopian world.
Let’s take a dive into the five factions…. and more.
1) Abnegation: The Selfless
In the Divergent series, Abnegation as a faction signifies selflessness above anything else. Members commit their lives to helping others, with the belief that being selfish is the core of human blemishes.
Due to their selflessness and uprightness, Abnegations are often assigned to handling governmental headship roles. They also supply help to the factionless, giving them food and support when the rest of the factions won't.
Then again, their unbending humbleness makes them susceptible to manipulation, letting factions like Erudite and Dauntless conquer authority and command from them.
Abnegation almost always dresses themselves up in quite simple grey clothes and actively steers clear of ornamentations, strengthening their pledge to humbleness.
Their initiation process comprises community service for a month, trailed by a ritual in which the elders wash the newcomers' feet, signifying their virtue of serving others.
2) Dauntless: The Brave
Dauntless represents valor and being physically strong. Faction members act as shields, keeping the city safe and providing security. They believe that dread leads to faintness, so their initiation process is extremely gruesome.
For their initiations, newly joined members are required to jump onto trains while they move at a fast pace, occupy themselves with combat training, and face their greatest fears in a simulation.
Tris' choice to join Dauntless is a crucial scene in Divergent. She partakes in severe training to attest to her value. Dauntless are identifiable by their black clothes, tattoos, and piercings. They attach importance to valor but can also be wild, sometimes muddling up unkindness for power. Initiates who disappoint in their ranks during the trials gamble on themselves to become factionless, making Dauntless the most challenging faction.
3) Amity: The Peaceful
Amity symbolizes compassion and being harmonious in the Divergent series. Amity is in charge of cultivation and food production, making sure that the people in the city have their food.
They give precedence to society and dodge quarrels at all costs. Unlike other factions, Amity does not have a stern forerunner. As an alternative, verdicts are done via democratic votes, with near-common harmony being the goal.
Amity makes use of a “Peace Serum,” a central part used to keep the people in the faction feeling satisfied and warding off quarrels. Amity’s dressing entails of optimistic red and yellow clothing, imitating their cheery characteristics.
Their initiation process is, for the most part, unspecified but is assumed to contain group doings such as picking fruits and singing.
4) Erudite: The Intelligent
In Divergent, Erudite values intelligence and scholarly activities above anything else. Erudites are the ones who constructed the factions because they believed that having no education and intelligence steers in the direction towards war and conflicts.
The faction members here strongly commit themselves to researching and enhancing tech, contributing to arenas like medication, engineering, and, most importantly, education. However, their hunger for wisdom can, every so often, lead to a superiority complex and a sense of arrogance.
Erudite’s identification in their clothes consists of at least one cloth of the color blue, a color assumed to heighten the functioning of the brain. Many members wear spectacles to accentuate their academic nature, irrespective of their vision requirements.
Their initiation is rough, involving strong analysis and quizzing. Those who miss the mark to sustain the faction’s scholarly criteria are thrown out and are set to live out their lives as being factionless.
Regardless of Erudite being in charge of numerous improvements in the society, their quest for wisdom devoid of virtuous reflections eventually advances to divergence.
5) Candor: The Honest
In Divergent, people involved with the Candor are certain that honesty and being translucent are the nitty-gritties of righteousness. They appreciate straightforwardness and have no patience for duplicity. Due to their unbiased nature, many members from Candor have been employed in sectors like law and government.
Candor’s initiation activity is psychologically and expressively challenging. Initiates have got to go through relentless lie detector run-throughs and also be injected with a truth serum, where they are required to make known their inmost confidences.
They wear black and white to epitomize their idea in outright sincerity. While their truthfulness certifies impartiality, it can also be viciously strict, steering to strain and pressure amongst them and the other factions.
While each faction in Divergent maintains its own principles and lifestyle, not every person in the city fits precisely into these factions. For those who don’t coincide within these factions, life occurs beyond the destined system—on the outskirts of society.
The Factionless: The Divergent/Society’s Outcasts
Beyond the systematized faction structure survives the factionless, a sidelined group that has no communal position whatsoever. Many of them were unsuccessful in completing the faction initiation process, while some of the others opted out to discard the harsh expectancies of the factions.
They take on the most unfavorable jobs, such as caretakers and factory laborers, and rely on Abnegation for groceries and dressing.
In spite of being perceived as castaways and exiles, the factionless play a fundamental starring role in the Divergent series. They denote the malfunction of the faction classification, evidencing that not every person tailors into a particular grouping.
In later installments of Divergent, i.e., the books and the films, the factionless revolt to oppose the already determined order, emphasizing the defects in the allegedly faultless system.
Each faction in Divergent operates with a specific purpose. Nevertheless, the stiff organization, in due course, runs to detachment and instability.
Tris' story uncovers the flaws and faults in this system, making known that genuine individuality cannot be restrained to a distinct specific trait. The presence of the factionless gives emphasis to the demand for a more accommodating society.
In the end, Divergent confronts the concept that any one virtue can define a person, making it an undeniable evaluation of human nature and rigid societal structures.
