Mel Gibson's 2004 hit film Passion Of The Christ is finally getting a sequel, as the director shared new information with fans for the follow-up of the cinematic phenomenon.
Gibson spoke to Joe Rogan on his podcast and revealed plans to start filming the sequel in 2026, along with offering more insights on what he has to offer for the sequel.
“I’m hoping [to start filming] next year sometime. There’s a lot required because [the script is] an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it. There’s some crazy stuff. In order to tell the story properly you have to start with the fall of the angels. You’re in another realm. You need to go Hell. You need to go to Sheol.”
As Rogan asked if Satan would be a part of the film, Gibson further added,
“You got to have his origin. I have ideas about how to do that and how to evoke things about to depict that. I’ve been thinking about that for a long time. It’s going to require a lot of planning. I’m not sure I can pull it off. It’s super ambitious, but I’m going to take a crack at it … It’s about trying to find a way in that’s not cheesy or obvious. It’s almost like a magic trick. [The story] goes from the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle.”
The sequel, as it was revealed, will be called The Resurrection of the Christ. Gibson has notably been working on the script for as long as seven years, with assistance from his brother Donal and Randall Wallace. He also added that the film's dialogues will be in English.
Who will play Jesus in Passion Of The Christ sequel?
The original film had Jim Caviezel giving a wonderful and highly acclaimed performance as Jesus, and speculations ensued if the actor would be making a return to his role. However, since the prequel was made two decades ago and Caviezel has visibly aged since then, fans were uncertain of his return.
However, Gibson confirmed on the same podcast that the actor will be returning for the sequel as Jesus and will undergo de-aging CGI.
The original film was massively successful, thanks to Caviezel and Gibson. It passed the $600m mark at the box office and emerged as one of the most successful films that year. With that being said, it's certainly exciting to see what the sequel will bring to fans.
What inspired Mel Gibson to make Passion Of The Christ?
The director has also spoken up about his beliefs and faith in Christianity and the Bible, which were ultimate sources of comfort as he recovered from his drug and alcohol addiction. That very faith laid down the foundation for what led him to make Passion Of The Christ as he continues talking about how he considers it a miracle to have gotten over his difficult phase.
Speaking to Joe Rogan, he said,
“Stuff happens in your own life … the results you get from appealing to a higher power other than yourself. I don’t think its any secret that I’m flawed in my nature — having been born an alcoholic. I did drugs, I did alcohol. And there was nothing that could stop me from doing that. That I was able to appeal to something beyond myself helped me stop doing that. For me, that was a miracle.”
