Yesterday, we did a story about Technoblade's tribute in A Minecraft Movie, and we mentioned that it might not exactly be heading to become the greatest film adaptation of video games of all time, but then the recent box office explosion had us thinking. Maybe there's a chance that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is getting a tight contender.
The film made $10.55 million from the domestic box office just from the previews, and all in all, it closed Friday with $55 million raked in, as Deadline notes. Now that's looking to close the weekend, as it's now closing at $130 million. The movie certainly has surpassed the expectations.
That was the overall business expected from A Minecraft Movie in its opening weekend, domestic and abroad, by Warner Bros. It looks like Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa) and expert crafter Steve (Jack Black) are successfully contributing to building these golden blocks.
A Minecraft Movie is out of the danger zone already
With opening numbers like these, A Minecraft Movie has already eliminated any danger of commercial failure. We can at least say that the film will see profits sooner or later during its theatrical run. Though that depends on when the creators will decide to pull it back from big screens. More importantly, when will they bring it to streaming screens?
Talking of streaming, there's no official confirmation by Warner Bros. for when it will arrive on our mobile and TV screens. Although looking at the company's past blockbuster releases like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) and Dune: Part Two, they were brought in for streaming only after 97 days and 81 days, respectively.
Both the films opened almost the same, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire making $80 million and Dune: Part Two $82 million. Fans later streamed them on Max, which will likely be the case for A Minecraft Movie, given it's the subsidiary of Warner Bros.
Where does A Minecraft Movie stand with past big openers?
If we take 2025 into consideration, the reported revenue makes it the highest-opening movie of the year already. Captain America: Brave New World, which was released on February 14, 2025, opened with $88 million on the weekend ($100 million if we consider it the four-day weekend).
Now if we look at the recent films that opened between $130 million and $140 million in the past, The Batman (2022) is the only Warner Bros. contender in front of the Jack Black film with a $134 million opening. Others include Moana 2 (2024) with $139 million, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) with $134 million, and more.
Now that's a film adaptation of one of the biggest video games to have ever existed, so it's only fair we bring some other adaptation to this equation. That said, The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which is also the highest-grossing film adaptation of a video game, opened at $146 million.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), which is still on a theatrical run, is nowhere to be found in the top 200 highest openers according to Box Office Mojo. However, its prequel opened with $72 million.
What's interesting is, while Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) had a better weekend than its sequel, the sequel has performed better commercially around the world, as it has earned $491 million at the time of writing, while the 2022 film earned $405 million globally throughout its run.
