Towards the end of A Minecraft Movie, we see all four of them subduing Malgosha. They do that by dismantling the portal of the Nether. By defeating Malgosha, the protagonists are free to return to the real world, having saved the Overworld from her influence.

After that, they used the orbit as a portal to return back home. Meanwhile, Steve could not get into the mines and was forced to be in the Overworld, where he eventually did well. Towards the end, Steve leaves the Overworld with the hope that he has a better place to be. Marlene, who is the Vice Principal at Henry's school, also meets with a good fate. She hits a guy in the real world, and in the post-credit sequence, it's shown that they are married. Marlene's subplot is not directly linked to the main storyline, but it's mainly for the humor.

The second post-credit sequence in the film showcases Steve returning to his house in the real world, where he meets a red-haired woman. She is introduced as Alex. This lays the groundwork for a potential sequel if the makers wish to continue this story.

In an interview with TechRadar, the film's director Jared Hess said that he wanted to tell a personalized story. He also said watching his daughter play the video game made him realize its possibilities.

"I watched my daughter playing it one day [and] she had a crazy, complex storyline [where] she'd built a hotel for wolves. I'd never seen that before, but that's proof that there's endless stories that go along with the game."

Hess said that he wanted to have the same approach when he was developing the film. He said,

"So, while we were developing our movie, we had to have the same approach. We're just one of many, many stories out there that's set in this world with these characters. For me, it was like 'how do we take a group of unlikely heroes, who are in a difficult place in their lives, and send them on this adventure where they have to use creativity to survive and cooperate?'"
