A Minecraft Movie is set to be released in the theatres on the 4th of April 2025, with it getting the much-loved sandbox video game to life in a live-action film!
The film will be produced by Warner Bros and this highly awaited film has been in the works for a long time – i.e., for at least a decade, with it being in talks ever since the year 2014.
Due to the pushback caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike taking place in 2023, A Minecraft Movie finally wrapped up its production in April 2024.
The film will be directed by Jared Hess. The movie follows a quartet of four misfits who have been transported to the Overworld, where they by hook or by crook need to depend on the aid and support of Steve, one of the most iconic characters in the game, to steer challenges like Piglins and Zombies with also finding their way back home.
The official synopsis for the film reads:
“Four misfits are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world while embarking on a quest with an unexpected, expert crafter.”

1) Jason Momoa as Garry:
Jason Momoa who joined A Minecraft Movie in April 2022, plays the character of Garry "The Garbage Man" Garrison. Garry is one of the four misfits who has been transported to the Overworld. Garry has to learn to unearth his distinctive creative strengths and skills in order to help the other misfits journey back to the real world.
Jason Momoa got his breakout role in Stargate Atlantis which further led him to landing upon bigger projects like Game of Thrones.
He is also recognized for his roles in Aquaman (2018) and Dune (2021).
2) Jack Black as Steve:
Jack Black plays the most known and iconic character of the Minecraft game and franchise i.e., Steve!
Unlike his character design in the game which is supposed to be quiet block-like due to the visuals, Jack Black’s version of Steve in the film will be more humanized to give it a live-action feel.
