Mo McRae's directorial debut is a suspenseful and dramatic watch that will keep you on the edge as you explore the film's characters and their motives. Branded as a satirical thriller with elements of suspense and drama, the film follows married couple James and Vanessa as they attack a white police officer (Brian) who was involved in the killing of a Black child.

The film explores topics of racism and the extremes a couple goes to, to defend their community. Throughout the film it explores Brian's less-than-charming personality as he makes subtle racist remarks to Vanessa, leading her to get even angrier as she confronts him about the killing. The result is him ending up tied to a chair as Vanessa pulls a gun on him, turning the tables, attempting to pull out a confession from him.

The film also explores the married couple's dynamic and their relationship as it zooms in on James' infidelity and Vanessa's manipulative mindset and her urge to assert dominance over James. The couple keep Brian hostage in their garage as they attend to guests Candy and Jamal, who are expecting a baby, the former of whom have slept with James.

The living, breathing tension in A Lot Of Nothing is James wanting to interrogate and dissect the situation first before jumping to conclusions. Vanessa, however, firmly believes that Brian's killing of the child had its roots in his racism. In a stunning portrayal from both the actors, the ending of the film reveals a much bigger picture.

The first revelation our protagonists face is that the child Brian killed wasn't Black; it was White. Things escalate and an altercation results in James shooting Brian, killing him.

As he grapples with the crime he committed, A Lot Of Nothing portrays the portraits of two individuals who end up getting involved in a crime themselves while attempting to solve one. An additional factor becomes James' initial hesitance to be involved in Vanessa's plan but ending up as the killer in a situation he did not want to be a part of. Beyond the events, the film is a stark portrayal of the two individuals and their attempts at justice gone bleak.

Vanessa's skepticism and doubt, driven by her anger at a flawed system, and James' inability to refuse to Vanessa's requests as he grapples with his own insecurities- both of these become central themes in the plot, giving viewers a picture of how both their worst flaws came together and altered their lives forever.

The film's ending scene sees Vanessa and James looking at a photo of Carol and Jamal's child, making it a marking of a new life they have started afresh, to move on from the hauntings of their past.

A Lot Of Nothing is available to stream on Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV and Prime Video.
