Various superhero movies and TV shows have depicted our favorite heroes in situations and moods that were even out of their control, resulting in making their characters appear more humane. Whether they are fighting terrifying monsters or unpleasant supervillains, some superheroes still are able to maintain their jovial and witty self, most of the time, such as Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.
However, that’s not the case for every superhero, as there still are some who, irrespective of the situation at hand, appear to be grumpy and brooding. But their grouchy demeanor does not take away the fun out of watching a superhero flick, as these heroes sometimes end up unintentionally creating funny moments with their savage or quick-witted comments.
In this article, we have listed 7 such superheroes whose grumpiness didn’t stop them from being funny at times.

7 Times a grumpy superhero made us laugh
7) Nebula

Nebula went through a lot of character transformation over the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise and the Avengers. Initially portrayed as one of the villains, her character gradually changed, becoming a superhero who helped the Avengers during the war with Thanos.
Often seen in a grumpy mood, Nebula’s arguments with her sister Gamora are always funny. Furthermore, her being reluctantly part of the Guardians of the Galaxy also created several comical moments as she kept on calling Rocket a fox, numerous times. Another incident is from the movie Avengers: Endgame when she, in her sombre tone, informs Rhodes about being careful while landing, as an idiot was sitting in the landing zone. The individual she calls an idiot is none other than Scott Lang, Ant-Man, and he is not the first one to be called an idiot by Nebula, as she has addressed several other people with that term over the years.
6) Hellboy

Not a traditional superhero, but a demon fighting the evil in the world, makes Hellboy a saviour in every sense. Hellboy is known for his short-tempered personality and often appears grumpy, which sometimes creates really funny exchanges and moments.
For instance, in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Hellboy shows us his ugly temper when the German psychic, Johann Krauss, reveals to Hellboy his one flaw. He tells him how this flaw makes him weak and vulnerable. After not being able to take on the criticism, Hellboy smokes Johann in this terrifying yet funny scene.
5) Jessica Jones

Marvel’s Jessica Jones is another superhero known for her often fierce and tough demeanor. This might have resulted mostly from her traumatic past, which is her encounter with the mind-controlling supervillain.
However, with the toughness and gruffness comes another trait, savageness, that makes this Marvel character entertaining to watch. Her personality of speaking her mind at all times often results in humorous exchanges, even with her fellow superheroes, such as Daredevil and Iron Fist, whom she also calls Ironclad sometimes. It's not just her close ones, she is the savage queen when it comes to giving it back to the villains with just her words.
4) James Rhodes/War Machine

When we talk about grumpy superheroes, MCU’s War Machine/James Rhodes is a must on the list. The character of Rhodes was introduced in the Iron Man film in 2008 and gradually became an integral part of the Avengers.
While not angry, Rhodes looks a little grumpy due to his dialogue delivery with a straight face that often makes up for a funny and entertaining moment. His conversations, or rather silly arguments with Iron Man, often become comic scenes. For instance, in Iron Man 3, Tony Stark calls Rhodes while he is on a mission and asks for his login ID and password. After a couple of seconds of reluctance, Rhodes shares his password, which is: War Machine Rox, resulting in laughter from not just the viewers and Stark but also the criminals in front of him.
3) Batman

The brooding and savage superhero from Gotham City, Batman’s gruff exterior is part of his personality, which is a result of his deeply traumatic past. This also makes him smile less and carry himself in a serious demeanor.
It is not just his quick thinking that is feared by the criminals, but also his savage comments that are sure to scare any character; even the members of the Justice League couldn’t run away from his comments sometimes. For instance, in one scene in the animated film Justice League Dark, the residents of the city begin committing crimes under the influence of magic. As the Justice League decides on how to tackle the problem, they begin debating on if they are capable of fighting with this kind of magic, when Batman shuts them down by telling them that to understand the criminally insane, they should spend more time on the streets rather than flying above it.
2) Hulk

The big green avenger might have changed now, but Dr. Banner’s initial days as the Hulk were not smooth. Every time he transformed himself into the big green Hulk, he had to become angry.
But sometimes this angry avenger also made us laugh with his unintentional humor. For instance, in the first Avengers movie, while Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is giving his speech of him a being a god and calls Hulk a dull creature, without wasting a single moment, Hulk grabs the immortal god of mischief and smashes him in the ground several times, resulting in a very popular funny scene.
1) Wolverine

This mutant and X-Men might be the grumpiest of all superheroes to ever exist, as in most of his appearances, you would have seen him with his famous frown, ready to scare even the deadliest of villains. His first meeting with the X-Men in the first X-Men movie will always be one of his encounters with the other mutants when he calls them funny names that were not liked by most of them.
There are many such moments, like stealing Cyclops' motorcycle, or making fun of Beast in his human form, which depict Wolverine’s savageness even when he is angry and grumpy.
