7 Must-Watch Movies for the Perfect Valentine's Day
We Live In Time
Hulu's latest addition to its list of must-watch romantic films is Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh starrer We Live In Time. It beautifully explores a complex relationship between two individuals who start off on the wrong foot. As the story progresses, we find them immersed in a loving relationship, battling a terminal disease, and making difficult choices. If your idea of a great romantic film is a tearjerker, then We Live In Time is just perfect for you.
The film is an intimate watch that explores the circumstances around the character dealing with a terminal disease and having to choose between a happily lived short time or choosing to undergo an uncertain treatment. Watch the movie on Hulu to find out more. Bonus points for Andrew Garfield who is usually a rare sight in romantic films.
Titanic
One of the best romantic films ever made, Titanic is a classic when it comes to Valentine's Day watch as we witness Rose Dewitt Buckater and Jack Dawson's unconventional love story for the umpteenth time.
Set aboard the Titanic, the biggest, most famous ship of that time, Titanic follows Rose and Jack's love story on the ship as they defy societal norms and the hierarchy of class to choose to be with each other. Rose, a well-off aristocratic woman who is engaged and set to get married, falls for Jack, a poor artist who won the ticket for Titanic in a lottery. What follows is a steamy romance between the two as they attempt to survive together after the ship drowns. It's a heartfelt one, for sure. Watch out for Celine Dion's iconic ballad My Heart Will Go On.
The Notebook
Based on Nicholas Sparks' iconic novel, The Notebook is a love story that transcends time as it revolves around two youngsters, Allie and Noah, who fall in love as teenagers. Coming from two families with completely different backgrounds, they both have a hard time continuing their love story as Allie is taken away to another city by her family who disapproves of her relationship with Noah.
Years later, as Allie is engaged and just before her marriage, she decides to pay the old town a visit and finds Noah, just as much in love as years ago. Watch out for the amazing adaptation of what route the couple takes in the end. Spoiler: It's a tearjerker.
500 Days of Summer
Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Lewitt are responsible for one of the biggest cult classics when it comes to the genre of romance. The catch? It's not a love story, but a story about love.
Summer and Tom are co-workers and make their first interaction because of their love for the band Smiths. Tom, a hopeless romantic, often talks about his desire to find real love, while Summer, a cynical woman, talks about how love is overrated and that she stays away from it. This doesn't stop Tom from falling for her, as he spends 500 days being in love with her. They get into a casual relationship where Summer takes a lighter route to things while Tom reaches the heights of his affection for her. The misbalance soon gets to them as they separate messily.
500 Days of Summer doesn't have a happy ending. At least not the kind you would expect while watching the film. It's heartfelt and funny, and gives a reality check: love doesn't always work out in your favor.
Call Me By Your Name
Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name gave Timothee Chalamet his breakout role as Elio Perlman, a young man in Italy whose family hosts a young man, Oliver as he conducts research in the country. Adapted from Andre Aciman's novel of the same name, the Uranian romance explores a passionate love affair between both men as they spend an entire summer in love.
One of the film's highlights is its stunning location, set in Italy. The film has been noted for its portrayal of love between two unusual characters as they navigate through their feelings and the shortage of time they have. The Academy Award-nominated film is sure to get you in the mood for love. Spoiler: we recommend having tissues handy.
10 Things I Hate About You
If your genre is romantic comedies, then 10 Things I Hate About You is just the right one for you. One of the earliest films to explore enemies-to-lovers, the film stars Julia Stiles and Heath Ledgers as classmates who hate each other. Stiles plays Kat Stratford, a cynical, occasionally rude woman who wants nothing to do with boys, while Leger plays Patrick Verona, a handsome young man who is quite the heartthrob.
As their dislike for each other grows and the plot develops as Verona lands a bet among his friends, the film explores the unusual circumstances under which they fall in love.
How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
Safe to say, one of the best romantic comedies ever made starred Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson as Benjamin Barry and Andie Anderson, each of them on a mission that will uplift their careers. Andie's mission is to date a guy and have him break up with you in ten days, a project she takes up to write a piece for the magazine she works for; while Benjamin is on the lookout for making a woman fall in love with him in ten days, a mission that will help him bag a million-dollar diamond project. They end up choosing each other as their targets.
As both their plans collide and intervene with the other, the film is a laugh-out-loud comedy as both their attempts to win their missions lead to disastrous situations.
All these movies are available to stream on Hulu, plans for which start at $16.99 a month.
