5 Motorsport movies you must watch before F1 hits theatres, ranked

F1 is one of the most awaited Hollywood films of 2025. The sports action drama is helmed by Joseph Kosinski while Ethren Kurger is the writer. It stars Brad Pitt as a former Formula One driver who was forced to retire after an accident. He is offered to help a young driver for a tournament.

F1 is slated to be released theatrically on June 27, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Besides Pitt, the film also stars Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem. Amid the hype of the release of F1, a lot of people are looking to watch movies involving motorsport.

(1) Rush (2013)

Rush is directed by Ron Howard and is written by Peter Morgan and is a nice predecessor of F1. It stars Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl playing the real-life drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda respectively and follows their journey during the 1976 season of motor racing. After its premiere at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival, Rush was released on September 20, 2013, and became a success. It is available on Amazon Prime Video.


(2) Ford v Ferrari (2019)

Ford v Ferrari is the directorial work of James Mangold and stars Matt Damon and Christian Bale. It chronicles Carroll Shelby, who is an automobile designer, and his team who is trying to build a racing car for Henry Ford. It had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and met with critical and commercial success after its theatrical release on November 15, 2019. The film can be enjoyed on Apple TV+.


(3) Cars (2006)

The only animated film in this list, Cars is an exciting film from Pixar that follows several vehicles that are anthropomorphic. The storyline focuses on Lightning McQueen who is a successful racer but gets stranded at a town. Directed by John Lasseter, the film was released on June 9, 2006, and was a major success for the studio. It is a breezy watch that showcases adrenaline-pumping race sequences with a lot of emotions. (4) Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)

Unlike other entries in the list, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is a comedic film with motorsports at the center of the story. This Adam McKay-directed film stars Will Ferrell (who has also written it with McKay) in the titular role. It revolves around Bobby who is a successful driver but has an immature attitude towards life. It was released on August 4, 2006, and turned out to be a success. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby can be viewed via rent on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video.


(5) Gran Turismo (2023)

Gran Turismo is an exaggerated version of the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough who is a British racer and is also based on the namesake video game series. Directed by Neill Blomkamp, the film stars Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, and Orlando Bloom among others. It had its world premiere at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and was released theatrically on August 25, 2023. The film became a critical and commercial success. However, some critics pointed out the writing of the film as well as the crashing moment being vowed into the story. Gran Turismo is available on Amazon Prime Video.
