Disney's Snow White live-action adaptation was one of the biggest projects the studio put out this year. Based on the classic fairytale, which was also the first film the animation studio created, it brought to life the first ever princess Disney had, and quite remarkably, the most beloved character in Disney history as well.
What once used to be the most anticipated Disney live-action project became one of the most controversial, criticized, and negatively received films by the production giant. The film went through backlash over its casting, CGI, unnecessary alterations to the story, and a vision that put a dent in everything the original film stood for.
Snow White opened in theaters with a dismal $16 million and is projected to earn $45 million over the weekend. It's the lowest number Disney has had in terms of live-action adaptations, making Snow White one of the fatal choices the studio could have made for itself amidst periods of neutral receptions the studio is already receiving.
Since the beginning of March, Disney has lost $30 billion in share capital, marking a huge dent in the studio's financial stance. Most of this is attributed to their woke vision of Snow White and a continuous attempt to promote so-called inclusivity that has not been received well by critics and fans.
For instance, Disney's comprehension of inclusivity is limited to recasting characters as people of color in live-action films, something the studio received backlash for when Halle Bailey joined the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
Apart from this, the studio has also received criticism for their woke movements, as per Fox News, like adding content warnings to their old films and getting rid of the terms "ladies and gentlemen" at theme parts just to promote the inclusivity of all genders.
As a result, the studio has been moving away from its original oath of entertainment — something we have all loved Disney for growing up. It is now leaning towards feeble attempts to be a woke studio while shredding off much-beloved classics in the name of being multiculturally sensitive.
How Snow White has affected Disney's image
Although the studio has been a topic of discussion among many for their past mistakes with live-action films and trials and errors of wokeness, Snow White certainly hits the nail this time. Disney has managed to turn one of the most beloved classic films into a narrative, pushing to alter the original story's charm just to add more feminist and racially inclusive tones to the film.
Much of the backlash revolved around Snow White actress Rachel Zegler's casting, who claimed that the new Snow White had nothing to do with the original description of the princess being "white as snow." Still, this time, it stood for a snowstorm the princess survived as a child, hence getting the name.
Next up is the straight-up omission of the Prince. The new princess does not need a princess to save her. We now have a brand new character called Jonathan who rebels against the Evil Queen but ultimately does show up to kiss Snow White and revive her from her death. This particular alteration has come across as meaningless to many as the studio has attempted to break the whole Prince and Princess trope in the film, leading to more disappointment.
The list doesn't stop. CGI dwarves, instead of casting real-life dwarf people, Zegler's constant criticism of the film and bashing the whole love story the original film was loved for, and both the lead actresses'- Zegler and Gal Gadot's political stances- all of it came together to create a recipe for disaster that Disney will take quite the time to recover from.
The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 43%, and it's only getting lower day by day. With nine more princesses to go, are Disney's chances at successful live-action remakes getting lower by the day? Only time will well.
Snow White is currently available to watch in theaters.
