Aaron Taylor Johnson's 28 Years Later is perhaps one of the most anticipated films of the year. The multi-starrer zombie thriller brings a fresh serving of post-apocalyptic action and suspense, as the survivors navigate through a world overrun by the undead, while also facing the challenges of rebuilding their civilization.

The movie is set to release on June 20, 2025.

The film, as director Danny Boyle told Empire, will revolve around the survivors in Britain as they go about their lives, embracing the new normal, and quarantining themselves in a close-knit community, connected to the mainland by a very thin thread. Boyle describes the community, saying,

“It’s a closed and necessarily very tight community. There are very strict defence laws, obviously, to survive that long in what is effectively an ongoing hostile environment. They’ve created a successful community, as they see it.”

He further revealed that the plot would revolve around Johnson's character and his family as they live on Holy Island, with communication with the mainland being limited to a causeway that is only accessible when the tide recedes every day.

He also added that the rest of the world is unaffected by the apocalypse and the zombie outbreak caused havoc in just the United Kingdom.

Before this, Ralph Fiennes had also raised the curtain on plot speculations of the film according to Deadline and said,

It’s three films, of which two have been shot. Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother.

He continues,

He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.

Is 28 Years Later going to be a trilogy?

It has already been revealed earlier that 28 Years Later is most likely the first part of a trilogy. Or at least that's what Danny Boyle and Alex Garland expect.

Both of them talked about their ideas surrounding the two sequels of the film in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, but they're keeping it under wraps for now as the green light for them would solely depend on how 28 Years Later performs.

Producer Andrew Macdonald hinted at the idea of making three more films at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last year in August according to The Hollywood Reporter and said,

“We’re making, hopefully, three more 28 films with the first one called 28 Years Later. Then we’re just about to start, tomorrow morning, actually, part two. And then we hope there’s going to be a third part and it’s a trilogy."

Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Alfie Williams are the main cast members. Johnson, Comer, and Williams will be portraying a family while Fiennes' role has been revealed to be of a doctor. Apart from that, Edvin Ryding, Erin Kellyman, and Jack O'Connell are also joining the film.

28 Years Later will be released in June 2025.
