4) The Fatty Arbuckle Scandal (1921)
In 1921, silent film star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle was accused of causing actress Virginia Rappe’s death during a party at a San Francisco hotel. Tabloids reported sensationalized stories about Arbuckle’s behavior, alleging assault. Though Arbuckle faced three trials and was eventually acquitted, his career was tainted by public outrage and media frenzy. The case led to stricter moral standards in Hollywood, giving rise to the Hays Code. Arbuckle spent his remaining years directing under a pseudonym before his death in 1933.
