The conversation between Janet and her daughter feels real because it doesn’t try too hard. They’re sitting at the kitchen table, both tired but unwilling to let the argument go. Janet brings up sacrifices she’s made while her daughter pushes back, accusing her of not understanding what it’s like to be young. Neither of them is completely right or wrong, and that’s what makes the scene work. The pauses between sentences say as much as the words do. By the end, nothing is resolved, but it feels like they understand each other a little more than they did before.
