1) Sara Ramírez - And Just Like That (2021)
Sara Ramírez was introduced as the first non-binary character in And Just Like That, the reboot of Sex and the City, but they barely hung around. Their character, Che Diaz, was meant to be a main part of the reboot's new direction, but Ramírez was let go apparently because of creative differences over the show's direction. This move sparked debate, especially regarding how the series handled its more progressive themes.
2) Melissa Barrera - In the Heights Sequel (2022)
Melissa Barrera, known best for her roles in In the Heights and Scream found herself highly publicized and fired in the planned Scream sequel due to alleged disputations over her characterization for the lead role. Colin Firth was originally cast to be the voice of the well-loved bear, Paddington, in the 2014 film Paddington. Ben Whishaw, therefore, took over the voice of Paddington. Although recasting was disappointing for Firth, later on, he spoke of it in positive terms saying it was the right choice for the film's tone as a whole. 6) Julianne Moore - Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018)
The movie Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) was her initial casting but she got sacked from the film because of scheduling issues. Shia LaBeouf was fired from Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling (2022) after reporting on-set tensions and behavior issues on set. However, his exit became some kind of media circus even after leaked text messages between LaBeouf and Wilde were published. Anne Hathaway was initially cast to play Katherine Heigl's role in Knocked Up (2007), but it wasn't long before she replaced another actress. Rumor has it that the reason Anne Hathaway was replaced due to creative differences with Knocked Up director Judd Apatow over the explicit birth scene. However, it appears that the rumors were indeed wrong. In an interview with Allure, Hathaway said, "Judd was right about that. My problem with it was that, not having experienced motherhood personally, I didn't know how I was gonna feel on the other side about giving birth."
9) Christian Bale - American Psycho 2
Christian Bale was initially cast for the lead role in American Psycho 2 (2002), but after months of casting, he was eventually let go when Leonardo DiCaprio became available. Even though he was fired, Bale continued training at the gym, thinking that the role would come back to him. He was quoted saying in an interview with Wall Street Journal, "I'm English, so I never go to a gym, but for that role, it was part of the whole deal that I had to go. I still kept going down to the gym every day because I was going, 'Oh, I'm making the film.'"
10) Chloë Grace Moretz - Bolt (2008)
Chloë Grace Moretz was originally the voice of the little girl named Penny who owns Bolt in Disney's 2008 animated film Bolt. At the age of 11, she completely voiced all the lines of the character. However, Disney decided to recast the role for Miley Cyrus, likely in hopes of using the momentum of fame from Hannah Montana. Despite her replacement, Moretz's voice was still used for the younger version of Penny, and she is credited with that role. It didn't affect Moretz's career as she soon obtained larger roles in films like Kick-Ass (2010).
11) Rachelle Lefevre - The Twilight Saga (2008-2009)
Rachelle Lefevre was surprisingly axed from the movie Twilight: New Moon (2009) when she was performing as Victoria, the evil vampire. She was actually discharged officially for scheduling conflicts on her role in Barney's Version that had been already settled even before New Moon's go-ahead. Still, others assumed that she and the film studio just weren't in sync and possibly the creative direction was way different for the character without her. 13) Janet Hubert - The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1993)
This was one of the most notorious exits from a TV series. Hubert played Aunt Viv, and the actress was reportedly fired by producers after several conflicts with the main star, Will Smith. The reason for the controversy was not only her difficult behavior during the shooting but also her salary issues. She was replaced quite suddenly by Daphne Maxwell Reid. Megan Fox was shockingly relieved of her position in Transformers after Revenge of the Fallen. This was reportedly because she insulted the director, Michael Bay, calling him "Hitler," in interviews. Even though she showed great chemistry with Shia LaBeouf, a star of the movie, the comments got her out and she was replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for the third movie. The actress has even stated that she was partly let go due to her not agreeing with Bay's extreme requirements for the shoot.
16) Shannen Doherty - Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-1994)
Shannen Doherty's time on Beverly Hills, 90210 ended due to reports of clashes with the co-stars and the producers. Brenda Walsh was a character who was written off after four seasons; it was reported that the character was removed because Doherty had a conflict off-set with the other co-stars, including Jennie Garth. Her exit did affect her career as it was some time before Doherty returned for the reboot of Beverly Hills, 90210 in 2008.
17) Stana Katic - Castle (2009-2016)
The abrupt termination of Stana Katic from Castle shocked the audience. Her dismissal was made before the eighth season and last season of the series, allegedly because of issues behind the scenes with co-star Nathan Fillion. Her decision was made apparently when she and the producers were not able to reach a common ground on the storyline about her character. No explanation was given, and fans were left disappointed. 18) Selma Blair - Anger Management (2012-2014)
Selma Blair was fired from the Charlie Sheen starring TV sitcom, Anger Management, amid a public feud with Charlie Sheen over her working relationship with him. The reports are that she filed a complaint about Charlie Sheen's behavior on the set of the show which led to her dismissal. Sheen later confirmed that indeed she left the show, and her character was written out of the series.
19) Kal Penn - House (2007)
Kal Penn's tenure in House as Dr. Lawrence Kutner came to an abrupt halt when he was offered a job as an associate director in the Obama administration's Office of Public Liaison. Not being able to decline this career opportunity. The writer, realizing he would not be returning, killed his character off by having Kutner commit suicide. Though both Penn and the show's creators made public statements claiming they were amicable, his character on the show was permanently done away with, and Penn went on to pursue a career in politics, eventually returning to acting to star in Designated Survivor and Clarice.
20) Taylor Momsen - Gossip Girl (2007-2012)
Taylor Momsen was not exactly fired when she left Gossip Girl, but rather left at the end of season two, with her choice to move on because of her desire to concentrate on her increasing music career. Momsen, who played Jenny Humphrey, had been continuously clashing with producers throughout the second season as her desire to focus on the band The Pretty Reckless intensified.
