1) Kim Basinger
Basinger had initially agreed to star in Boxing Helena before famously quitting. The surreal plot involved a surgeon amputating a woman's limbs to keep her captive. This allegedly made the actress feel uncomfortable, and she filed for bankruptcy after the producers sued her for breach of contract, winning $8.9 million. All this scandal distracted from the movie's box-office failure. She would go on to recover with an Academy Award in L.A. In 1998, confidential proof that her career could withstand the controversy.
2) Annette Bening
Annette Bening was initially cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Tim Burton's Batman Returns, and pre-production had even started. However, she suddenly dropped out when she discovered that she was pregnant. Michelle Pfeiffer replaced her and gave a performance that would forever be etched in the memory of filmgoers. Annette Bening has confessed that she does not have any regrets since the family had to take precedence. The fans, however, always wonder what her Catwoman would have made the movie tone like.
3) John Boyega
John Boyega had to leave Netflix's Rebel Ridge mid-shoot due to "family reasons," which immediately sparked industry rumors of possible creative differences with the production. Boyega denied any such claims. It turned out that mental health and other priorities were the actual reasons why Boyega chose to take himself away from the film. Subsequently, the actor transitioned to other projects like They Cloned Tyrone (2023).
4) Bette Davis
Bette Davis filmed several scenes for Wicked Stepmother, but left production after allegedly getting into conflicts with director Larry Cohen. Ryder's leaving compelled Coppola to get the services of his daughter Sofia, whose performing style received terrible reviews. Later, Ryder even joked that missing the role may have been a blessing in disguise since the film failed to meet the expectations set by its predecessors.
6) James Purefoy
James Purefoy shot a few scenes as the masked vigilante V but left V for Vendetta, citing difficulties in working under the stifling mask and creative differences with the Wachowskis. He was replaced by Hugo Weaving, who re-shot all of Purefoy's scenes. Dougray Scott had been originally cast as Wolverine for X-Men but dropped the role after Mission: Impossible 2 scheduling conflicts were a challenge. His move opened up the role of Wolverine over two decades of playing and redefining the character to Hugh Jackman. Afterward, he said that though the role stung upon being left behind, his other television roles were truly amazing such as Batwoman. Fans often argue about what would have transpired in Scott's performance of Wolverine, but undoubtedly Jackman's performance stood iconic.
9) Ed Skrein
He first landed the role of Major Ben Daimio for Hellboy (2019), but he resigned, much to public outcry. Public clamor did rise following complaints that the character portrayed issues of whitewashing. He quit to create the necessary awareness in Hollywood concerning proper representation. The actor then received applause for his noble choice. Daniel Dae Kim, a Korean-American actor-received the casting of the role. With disappointing box office results, it remained that Skrein's stand had guaranteed himself as a principled artist.
10) Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone was at first cast for Axel Foley, but he dropped out, reportedly wanting the film more as an action thriller, rather than a comedy that would end up being, and the humor that this franchise is famous for. Eddie Murphy starred in the movie, replacing Stallone after he left due to creative disagreements. Sylvester Stallone later joked that leaving it was a blessing since he got to give his attention to Rambo: First Blood Part II which was released in 1985.
11) Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson left Luck after Skydance Animation hired John Lasseter, whose past misbehaviors were against her standards. In an open letter to the studio, Thompson said she could not continue the project while keeping the workplace standard. 13) Jean-Claude Van Damme
Jean-Claude Van Damme was the intended star as the eponymous alien in Predator; he quit filming as producers allegedly argued with him to retain the infamous costume. However, one should know, that the initial costume design for the movie wasn't all that great. Van Damme, a trained kickboxer struggled throughout shooting because of how unyielding the costume was. Ultimately, Kevin Peter Hall stepped into the costume which became the first version of the alien called Predator. Later on, Jean-Claude Van Damme would claim that his performance in this film was compromised due to its limitations but even before then, he transitioned to Bloodsport 1988.
14) Debra Winger
Debra Winger was initially cast for Dottie Hinson in A League of Their Own. She backed out when the singer, Madonna, became part of the film. The actress thought the singer would make the film a gimmick rather than a dramatic sports film. Geena Davis replaced her, and the rest is history. Later on, Winger confessed she was disappointed with the whole ordeal, but the reason why she walked away from it showed how serious she is about sticking to her artistic guns.

In any case, Josh Duhamel was promptly replaced, and the film could continue. The film became somewhat of a moderate hit for Jennifer Lopez, even amidst the chaos. 18) Shia LaBeouf
Shia LaBeouf left the Don't Worry Darling production mid-pre-production, sparking controversy and rumors.
