Phil doesn't want to be a traditional strict dad to whom kids never open up. For this, he has adopted a cool dad mentality. He always brushes up on the trends, trendy slang, and technologies so that he is in sync with his kids. He tries to become more of a friend than a parent and joins them in their hobbies and interests. He is very involved in his kid's social lives and sometimes even embarrasses himself but all of this is just a testimony to the fact of how he genuinely loves being a father.
