Through its main anthem, "La Bamba," the film documents the musical journey of Valens from his working-class family roots to his rise to fame while he deals with family and romantic relationships. The terrible 1959 plane crash serves as the story's climax by ending the life of the 17-year-old Valens. Luis Valdez directed this movie to highlight the musical achievements that characterized the brief period of a rising artist.
