The movie was released on October 5, 2007, and is based on a personal and disturbing portrait of Joy Division's mysterious vocalist Ian Curtis (Sam Riley). The film, which was directed by Anton Corbijn, depicts Curtis' transformation from a poet in a tiny village to a post-punk star. It documents his struggles with melancholy, epilepsy, and his broken marriage to Debbie Curtis (Samantha Morton). The movie was shot in harsh black and white and depicts a poet whose genius was overshadowed by personal suffering in a tragic yet poetic way.
