Supergirl's mother, Alura Zor-El, was portrayed initially by Laura Benanti in the first two seasons of the series. Benanti breathed warmth and strength into the Kryptonian matriarch; she was a guide and deep emotional connection to Kara for her heritage. In Season 3, however, the role of Alura was taken over by Erica Durance, famous for her role as Lois Lane in Smallville. Durance introduced a very different energy into Alura's overall appearance, exuding more of an authoritative air.
