The movie is about how he falls in love and clashes with a hardened Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, who he trains under. Yet, Mayo rises above his struggles and the stain of having a drunkard father to become a disciplined and virtuous military man and even softens the heart of his sergeant. Mayo stands for his friends and is a loyal character.
