Ok, so Potterheads your wish is finally coming true; there's going to be a series. The movies did great, but those who read the books can't deny the fact that a lot was missing in the movies. To fill that void, HBO is bringing a TV show with brand new casts. True, we will miss the awesome actors who nailed it the first time but there is also the added excitement of seeing characters that were left out, including Charlie Weasley or Marvolo Gaunt or Regulus Black. As the students will be new casts, we are only focusing on the adult roles. So, here is the list of 17 Harry Potter fan castings we would love to see in the series. Disclaimer: This article is based on the author's opinions.
1) Cillian Murphy as Remus Lupin
The worn down look of Remus Lupin can get difficult to portray. But Cillian Murphy's calm aura can be a good match for the role. Originally played by David Thewlis, this character is a friend of Harry's father James Potter and a werewolf as well. Murphy's composed nature will surely match the insightful Defence Against the Darks Arts teacher of Hogwarts. Well, it's not only just the looks, we also need to consider Murphy's undeniably great acting skills as well.
2) Jason Momoa as Rubeus Hagrid
Ok, we need someone big for this role. Granted, can be achieved by CGI, but just to make things easier we can consider Jason Momoa for this role. Although he doesn't really use British accent but surely can achieve that rugged Hagrid's rugged look. Robbie Coltrane's performance as Hagrid will remain unmatched but we would absolutely like to see Momoa taking up the role. Remember, we need someone big, strong and someone who looks awesome in a mane.
3. Timothée Chalamet as Regulus Arcturus Black
This character was not shown in the movies but holds great importance as he was the first one to figure out Voldemort's secret. Regulus Black was actually Sirius' younger brother and unlike the elder one, he was interested in dark arts and joined Voldemort right after school only to get dragged underwater by inferis. We need an actor who is younger since the story will mostly be focusing on a Hogwarts pass out and Timothée Chalamet will be a great match with his jet black hair and intense gaze.
4) Hugh Jackman as Fenrir Greyback
Who else other than our beloved Wolverine? Also Fenrir Greyback was the leader of the werewolf pack that aided Voldemort in the final battle. Dane Legeno nailed the role but Jackman's menacing appearance will give an edge to this negative character. We will see more of this werewolf who doesn't wait for a full moon in the series and Jackman's ripped look will surely attract audience. Let's not forget, Hugh Jackman was ultimately a werewofl in Van Heilsing as well. So why not one more time?
5) Glen Powell as Gilderoy Lockhart
The flamboyant and fame crazy Defence Against the Dark Arts professor from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was beautifully played by Kenneth Branagh. But for the series we can add a little more glamour and vanity to the character. No wonder, the Top Gun: Maverick actor will do a great job in this role. He looks great, he looks like a celeb right after waking up and he is an awesome actor.
6) Tom Hardy as Alastor Moody
The most accomplished auror of the entire franchise. Suspicious of everything post retirement and a protector till the end. Yes, it wasn't actually Mad Eye who taught Harry Defence Against the Dark Arts in his fourth year but still Barty Crouch Jr. stayed in Moody's character. It would be an absolute treat to see Tom Hardy playing the role of this vicious dark wizard catcher. His rugged look and not-caring attitude goes well with Moody's lack of respect for the authiority.
7) Joaquin Phoenix as Lucius Malfoy
Shrewd and classy. That's the vibe of Lucius Malfoy. It shouldn't be a problem for Phoenix to pull that aura, infact he would be just great for the series. We don't get to see enough of this character in the movies but no doubt he plays a vital role. Anyone who has seen Gladiator would acknowledge that Phoenix is good at portraying class blended with calm. Although he didn't had the sleek blonde look, but that surely won't account for much. Who knows? We might end up loving that look more.
8) Nicole Kidman as Narcissa Malfoy
You can't deny Nicole Kidman, despite her super classy looks, has a very kind look. Helen McCory did a brilliant job in the movies no dout, but we don't get to see much of her in the movies. In a series, an actress as seasoned as Nicole Kidman can give the character it's much deserved clarity. It would be beautiful to see Kidman playing the haughty pure blood Black descendant as well as a distressed mother desperately trying to protect her child.
9) Charlize Theron as Bellatrix Lestrange
Helena Bonham Carter portrayed Bellatrix Lestrange quite differently from the books. She chose to use the madness angle of the character where the book showed a more grumpier version. As a descendant of the pure blood maniac Black family just like her sister Narcissa, it would be lovely to watch Charlize Theron in this iconic role. Therin's natural ability to nail action-packed role needs no introduction and she would be a great cast for this power hungry Death Eater.
10) Henry Cavill as Sirius Black
Yes, he will need to give up the muscular built as a prisoner of Azkaban, but other than that just imagine Henry Cavil as Sirius Black. Yes, it will be difficult to fill in the shoes of Gary Oldman, but come on, it's our Witcher and Superman. Cavill's innocent charm will be a great match for Sirius' carefree nature and he can be an excellent godfather to Harry. Moreover, the occasional feuds with Snaoe will look great with Cavill in it.
11) Jason Statham as Mundungus Fletcher
Yes, it will be difficult for Statham fans to see the invicible action star and an accomplished martial artist getting pinned down by a 16-year old Harry Potter. But can you imagine of someone else when it comes to play the role of a low life criminal. Mundungus Fletcher was a crook and a coward too as per the books, the movies portrayed the same. The series will need to give more attention to this character and the menacing look of the Transporter star will do nothing less than good justice.
12) Hugh Grant as Cornelius Fudge
Robert Hardy nailed the duality of this role in the movies. The Minister of Magic, who had to step down owing to his denial about Voldemort's return, was initially kind but almost acted as a villain in the fifth book. Hugh Grant's grand appearance will be a great match for a politician. On one hand he can be the nice and caring minister waiting for Harry's arrival at Leaky Cauldron on the other one, he can be the shrewd politician trying to take down Albus Dumbledore. In the series we will get to see more of this character and it'll be an absoulute treat to see Hugh Grant in a political role.
13) Daniel Craig as Rufus Scrimgeour
We don't get to see much of this character in the movies. But in a series, specially from Half Blood Prince, we need a lot of this new Minister of Magic. Bill Nighy did an awesome job playing the character. But Daniel Craig has that menacing look. Well of course, he is Bond after all. We will need someone tough to portray the role of ex-Head of Auror office and the present Minister of Magic. Also, let's not forget that despite his lack of faith in Harry and Dumbledore's secret plan, his last act was to protect Harry. Craig will do excellent in this role.
14) Meryl Streep as Minerva McGonagall
Maggie Smith will remain unforgettable for this iconic role. Stern, fair and occasionally kind. The Transfiguration professor had a key role in the entire franchise and no doubt in the movies we will get to see a lot of her. Meryl Streep's contribution in movies is just undeniably great and she can bring that strict professor vibe throughout the series. The showdowns with Umbridge or Snape would look really good with her. Also, the competitive attitude of McGonagall when it came to winning the House Cup should be a piece of cake for this actor.
15) Tom Hiddleston as Severus Snape
Ahh, the finest and the darkest character of the franchise. Alan Rickman will forever stay in our hearts as Snape and it will be difficult for anyone to play this role. So, why not our favourite Loki? Yes, Tom Hiddleston looked more wicked than irritated as Loki but he should do just fine portraying snape. Although, it was not shown in the movies but Snape had some witty comebacks, specially with Sirius Black. Imagine Henry Cavill and Tom Hiddleston nose to nose arguing about Harry's occlumency class.
16) Sir Ian McKellen as Albus Dumbledore
Ok, this is far fetched. But let us break down the character. An old and wise wizard teaming up against evil power. Rings a bell? That's right. Gandalf the Grey. Those who watched Lord of the Rings can't deny the fact that Sir Ian McKellen would've been an excellent Dumbledore. He is calm, wise and his energy is magnificient. After Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, Sir Ian McKellen is no doubt a great match. He just needs to welcome students every year instead of saying "You shall not pass".
17) Christian Bale as Lord Voldemort
Remember the menacing villain Gorr from Thor: Love and Thunder? Yes, Christian Bale was absolutely brilliant in that role. The Dark Lord was power hungry and cold. Ralph Fiennes was awesome and we all wish to see him in that role again. But Bale is a completely different entity. Apart from acting he is famous for his physical transformations for a role. Tom Marvolo Riddle a.k.a Lord Voldemort has to be portrayed by someone who has a knack for playing a stone cold villain. So who else than our favourite Patric Bateman?
