12. Timecrimes (2007)

This Spanish thriller grounds and minimizes the time travel aspect. An ordinary man, Héctor, finds a time machine and is sucked into a vortex of lies and unforeseen effects. He attempts to rectify the timeline and, in doing so, finds the worst within himself. Masterful in its tight script and small location, Timecrimes demonstrates that big ideas don't require big budgets for great sci-fi. Its clever twists and moral dilemmas make it endlessly re-watchable, offering new layers of meaning with each viewing.
