Based on a book by Kristin Hannah, set in 1825 Tasmania, The Nightingale is a harrowing revenge story about the consequences of violence and colonial brutality. After Clare's family was slaughtered by British soldiers, this young Irish convict embarks on a journey of vengeance. There is no flinching on the horrors of the period and it's brutally unflinching when Clare pursues her justice. The film, with great performances from Aisling Franciosi, and an emotionally raw script, challenges the concept of heroism in revenge as it brings up an unrelenting look at trauma and survival.
