Sometimes movies deliver such cold and lethal comebacks that they manage to steal the scene. They are so witty, bordering on insult that they come out to be utterly hilarious. 1) Gone with the Wind (1939)
The classic 1939 movie – Gone with the Wind is loved by a lot of people. It is responsible for delivering an iconic cold burn. Rhett and Scarlett share a very difficult relationship. Rhett was constantly trying to win Scarlet and hopelessly devoted his time and energy to that. And finally, when Scarlet loses everything she wanted, she turns back to Rhett in the hope that he will still care for her. She asks him – “where shall I go? What shall I do?” In a classic cold fashion, Rhett replies –“ Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.” This has become an iconic line of cinema.
2) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
The popular Harry Potter series gave us a very hateful character in the form of Dolores Umbridge. This professor of defense against the dark arts punished Harry Potter by making him write “I must not tell lies” on the back of his hand with his own blood. When Professor Umbridge is about to be killed by a group of centuries, she asks Harry to tell them that she is not the villain they assume her to be. It is then that Harry delivers this cold burn as revenge for the unjust punishment she gave him by saying “Sorry, professor, I must not tell lies.”
3) Casablanca (1942)
The movie Casablanca is considered an iconic hit. In this movie, a notable scene is when a sharp exchange is taking place between Rick and Ugrate. Grate’s character is somewhat self-conscious and defensive, and out of that he asks Rick – You despise me, don’t you? To which Rick replies – If I give you any thought, I probably would. This comeback, back in 1942 was considered a great apathetic reply.
4) Come September (1961)
The movie Come September released in 1961 is about a businessman who returns to his house to find it turned into a hotel. In one of the scenes, there is an iconic line delivered by Lisa Helena Fellini. In her classic fashion, she says to Robert L. Talbot - ‘When you get to the terrace, would you do me a favor?’ She then adds ‘jump off.’ The perfect delivery of this line made it a very menacing burn.
5) How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)
The 1953 movie – How to Marry a Millionaire, is a satire on gold-digging combined with romantic aspirations in a hilarious manner. A scene in the movie involves the main protagonist, asking the girl he likes ‘Do you seriously believe that having money automatically brings you happiness?’ To which she replies- ‘well, no… But it doesn't automatically depress me either.’ The tone of the delivery makes this dialogue a hit.
6) Clue (1985)
The 1985 movie – Clue, has now become a cult classic. The movie is about a group of strangers on a mysterious dinner in a mansion which takes on a dangerous turn. The movie has a witty scene when the character of Colonel Mustard says, "Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests? 7) The Breakfast Club (1985)
A great insult was delivered by the character of Bender in the movie The Breakfast Club. An intense exchange between Bender and Principal Vernon leads Bender to insult his fashion sense by saying – "Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?” Barry Manilow used to be a famous singer who was notorious for his ballad-style outrageous outfits. This sharp and humorous delivery made this scene a very humorous one.
8) Bridesmaids (2011)
One of the unique and funniest insults came from the 2011 comedy – Bridesmaids. The scene involves the bridal party in a shop trying on dresses when they get food poisoning and get severely ill. To mock them, Megan played by Melissa McCarthy mocks one of the characters called Helen, by saying – "you look like an old mop.” This blunt and absurd comparison makes the whole scene very funny and makes this dialogue a pop culture favorite burn.

The movie – The Silence of the Lambs, involves an agent, trying to get information out of a cannibalistic serial killer – Hannibal Lecter. During one of the first meetings between them, Hannibal absolutely insults Agent Starling by saying – “you know what you look like to me, with your good bag and your cheap shoes? You look like a Rube. A well-scrubbed, hustling rube with a little taste.” In fact, he even goes on to call her – poor white trash.
10) Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy movie about some old money-rich people living in Singapore. The movie features, Astrid, a rich woman who needs to tone down her aspiration and love for shopping because her husband isn't as rich as her and feels insecure. When she has done so much for him, and he turns out to be unfaithful, she absolutely roasts him by saying – “It's not my job to make you feel like a man. I cannot make you something you’re not.” This one is loved by the feminists.
11) The Hangover (2009)
The Hangover is an absolutely hilarious movie about a group of friends away on a bachelorette. It is filled with comedy and insult amidst a chaotic scene. Usually roasting somebody involves insulting them but what if that person is too dumb to even be insulted? This is exactly what happens in a conversation between the characters of Stu and Allan. A very frustrated Stu insults Allen by saying - You Are literally too stupid to insult. The deadpan delivery of this line adds it to the list of cold burns of cinema.
12) Home Alone (1990)
The 1990 movie – Home Alone is considered a classic holiday watch. It is loved by people of all ages. One of the scenes in the movie involves the character of Kevin being insulted by his older sister Linnie. Linnie is sarcastic and witty and when she sees Kevin causing accident after accident like spilling milk in the kitchen, she says to him –"You Are what the French call Les Incompetent”
13) Avengers: Endgame (2019)
The movie Avengers Endgame involves a confrontation between the characters of Iron Man, and Thanos. In this iconic touchdown between the two superpowers, as Thanos tries to gain control of the infinity stones, to eradicate half of humanity, he snaps his fingers and says – I am inevitable. But what he didn't know was that Iron Man had already stolen the stones and he then snaps his fingers to defeat Thanos and delivers the cold burning, come back – “And I am Iron Man.”
14) Waiting to Exhale (1995)
The movie – Waiting to Exhale, involves the character played by Angela Bassett, being left, heartbroken by her husband of 11 years who cheated on her. To take her revenge, she tosses all of his things on his luxurious car and sets it up on fire. When a firefighter arrives, he tells her that it is against the law to burn anything, besides trash in your own yard, she deadpan replies – “it is trash.”
15) Aliens (1986)
The 1986 movie Aliens features, another coldest burn in the history of cinema. Agent Vasquez is tough and sometimes her toughness is mocked by her sexist colleagues. When one of her colleagues – Hudson says "Hey Vazquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?” Instead of feeling insulted by his comment, she insults him right back without missing a beat by saying – “No. Have You?” This line is a perfect representation of her wit and sharp mind.
