Under the tinsel and glamour of cinema and television lies a world full of unseen risks and dangers. Indeed, though well-engineered and designed to meet high standards of safety at every turn, accidents, health emergencies, and minor goofs resulted in tragedies that were felt and trembled throughout the entire industry.
Where stunt actors are a sort of lowly form of life, the stars remind us of where it all began: men and women of frailty behind the stardom.
The following stories of 15 actors who met their deaths on set or during filming, in catastrophic scenarios that left their legacies in heartbreak, make a case for emotional and physical safety in the entertainment industry.
1) Heath Ledger:
Heath Ledger, the Australian acting superstar, who had only recently completed an unforgettable performance as the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and was midway through filming on Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment in an overdose of drugs on 22 January 2008. To pay tribute to Ledger and finish the film, Gilliam brought in close friends of the deceased actor, including Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, to play his character in the remaining scenes and a poignant tribute to his legacy.
2) Paul Walker:
It was with much sorrow that on 30th November 2013, Paul Walker, the actor who acted in Fast & Furious, died tragically in a car crash accompanied by his friend as well as former racing associate Roger Rodas. Their car lost control after leaving an event where a charity had been held and crashed into a tree killing the duo instantly. At that time, the production of Fast & Furious 7 was already in the works, so Universal Pictures faced the difficult decision of deciding whether to suspend the project indefinitely. They eventually decided to go on with it, using special effects and stunt doubles to wrap up Walker's scenes and show respect to the actor.
3) Brandon Lee:
On March 31, 1993, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died in tragic circumstances on the set of The Crow. In filming a scene where his character was intended to be shot, a handgun used in the production discharged a fragment of a real bullet that struck him in the abdomen. Despite the efforts made for his life, Lee breathed his last that day at the age of 28, with what could have been a promising career cruelly cut short.
4) River Phoenix:
River Phoenix passed away outside The Viper Room in Hollywood on October 31, 1993, from an overdose of drugs. The autopsy proved that he had several drugs inside his body, which included cocaine and morphine. Phoenix was working on the drama Dark Blood at the time of death, and he was still under production for nearly two decades. It was completed after years of doubts and was finally given to the audience in 2012 as a poignant glimpse into Phoenix's immense talent and his unfinished legacy.
5) Philip Seymour Hoffman:
On February 2, 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman was discovered dead in the hotel room of a Manhattan hotel from a heroin overdose. The star of the film Capote, the Oscar winner in 2006, had a history of winning his battles with addiction but, tragically, ended up relapsing eight months before he died, marking the end of nearly 25 years of sobriety. When Hoffman died, he was almost on the last day of shooting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 with just a week more of its production schedule. Still, he died when he was only 46 years old, leaving behind the memory of truly extraordinary talent and inescapable performances.
6) Natalie Wood:
She was filming Brainstorm at the time of death. Natalie Wood drowned on November 29, 1981, off of California's Catalina Island. The incident occurred during a weekend boat trip, where she was joined by her husband, Robert Wagner; her co-star from Brainstorm, Christopher Walken; and the captain, Dennis Davern. Her death in that manner is one of Hollywood's greatest, darkest mysteries and speaks to a career marked by remarkable performances and unforgettable roles.
7) Marilyn Monroe:
Marilyn Monroe was shooting the comedy Something's Got to Give when her life came to a tragic end. On August 5, 1962, she was found dead in her Brentwood home in California. The cause of death was determined to be an overdose of barbiturates; the official decision was that of probable suicide. Monroe's death meant losing a legendary figure whose charm and talent may yet continue to captivate people around the globe.
8) John Candy:
On March 4, 1994, an unsuspecting massive heart attack took the life of beloved actor and comedian John Candy who was 43 years old when he died in his sleep. He had just recently completed some final scenes for the comedy Wagons East! Thought of by many as big-belly humor and hearty laughter, this jovial comedian could be described with such warmth and humor: larger than life. His sudden death shocked fans and colleagues as he took away an end filled with unforgettable performances in classics like Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Uncle Buck. Candy's legacy has emerged to bring joy to the movies amongst many around the world.
9) Cory Monteith:
Cory Monteith was the breakout star of the musical comedy Glee on the Fox. He was found dead inside a Vancouver, Canada hotel room on July 13, 2013. His death occurred at the time between the fourth and fifth seasons of the show. It was ascertained through the investigation that his death was the result of a lethal overdose of heroin and alcohol, with no signs of foul play. Monteith was 31 years old at the time of his death.
10) John Ritter:
Star of the ABC sitcom 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, John Ritter, collapsed on set due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect causing an aortic dissection on 11 September 2003. He was rushed to the nearest hospital and succumbed to medical efforts that night. The sudden tragic loss of Ritter cut short the life of an actor so graciously celebrated for his comedic brilliance and warm screen presence, leaving fans and colleagues heartbroken.
11) Oliver Reed
Oliver Reed passed away from a heart attack on May 2, 1999, during the filming of Gladiator. His unexpected death occurred just days after he had completed his scenes for the film. Reed was known for his larger-than-life persona and intense performances, which often mirrored his off-screen antics. His character, Proximo, was pivotal to the film's narrative, and Reed's performance contributed significantly to its success. 12) Edward Herrmann
Edward Herrmann, best known for his role as Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls, passed away on December 31, 2014, at the age of 71 after a battle with brain cancer. He died in a New York hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.
Herrmann's manager described him as a "true gentleman and a scholar."

13) Aaliyah

James Dean died in a car crash on September 30, 1955, just before the release of Rebel Without a Cause, which would cement his status as a cultural icon. At only 24 years old, Dean's life was cut short while driving his Porsche Spyder to a race in California. 15) Vic Morrow
Vic Morrow tragically died on July 23, 1982, during the filming of Twilight Zone: The Movie. He was killed in a helicopter accident while filming a scene that involved explosions and a low-flying helicopter. Morrow was attempting to rescue two child actors, Renee Chen and Myca Dinh Le, when the helicopter crashed, leading to their deaths as well.
