Gimli’s character in The Lord of the Rings movies is known for his bravery, humor, and loyalty to his friends and companions. Welsh actor John Rhys-Davies portrayed the role of Gimli in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There are several moments in the movies — such as Gimli’s friendship with Legolas, and his courageous stand against enemies — that show him as a great warrior and a good friend. Here is a list of 10 moments when Gimli won our hearts.
1) The Council of Elrond

In the first The Lord of the Rings movie, during the council of Elrond that took place in Rivendell, Gimli showed us a glimpse of his bravery. As the ring was presented and Elrond was briefing the fellowship on how to destroy the ring, Gimli abruptly stood up and tried to destroy the ring with his axe. The scene showcased Gimli’s impatience, too, which sometimes provided comic relief amidst tension and bravery, which was essential for the fellowship, so that Frodo could destroy the ring forever.
2) Rivals become friends

As dwarves and elves cannot see eye to eye, according to The Lord of the Rings lore, Gimli’s and Legolas’s friendship was unexpected yet heartwarming. Their competition to keep a count of their kills is one of the most memorable yet amusing exchanges between the two. When Legolas kills an Oliphaunt in the final battle of Pelennor Fields, Gimli seems impressed. But he still counters with a witty comment about counting it as just one kill.
3) Nobody Tosses A Dwarf

In the first Lord of the Rings movie, the fellowship is trapped between the orcs and the Balrog. As they try to save their lives by running away, Aragorn tosses Samwise to the other side of a gap that the hobbit wouldn’t have been able to cross. He tries to do the same to Gimli but he refuses by declaring: "Nobody tosses a Dwarf!" Then, he jumps across the gap, though he almost falls into it. However, in a hilarious moment amidst the chaos, Legolas saves him by pulling him by his beard even as Gimli tells him not to touch his beard.
4) A gift from Galadriel

Gimli, from the moment he sees Galadriel, seems stunned by her beauty. He even manages to impress her with his words of admiration. As a result, when Galadriel asked him what gift he wants, he asked for a single golden hair from her head but she gave him three. The scene showcased Gimli’s awe of Galadriel’s beauty and also his shyness around her.
5) Drinking game with Legolas

This scene in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is a fan favorite among 'Gimli and Legolas' moments. During a feast in the halls of Rohan, Gimli and Legolas take part in a drinking contest where the last one standing wins. Both of them consume a lot of ale. While Legolas only feels a tingling sensation in his fingers, Gimli is knocked out by the alcohol. The scene added humor to the otherwise tense environment of the movie, and gave us one of the most iconic moments between the friends.
6) Gimli holds Wormtongue down

In the second movie of The Lord of the Rings series, when Gandalf the White comes to Rohan and tries to free King Theoden of Rohan from the spell of Saruman. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli knock down anyone who tries to stop Gandalf. As Grima Wormtongue approaches Gandalf, Gimli holds him with his foot and warns him to stay still. As a result, King Theoden is freed from Saruman’s spell.
7) Legolas’ joke on Gimli's height

In the battle of Helm’s Deep in the second The Lord of the Rings movies, as they gears up to fight with the approaching hordes of Uruk-Hai, Gimli is unable to see them. He asks Legolas to tell him what is happening, and Legolas immediately quips if he should describe it to him or find a box for him to stand on. To everyone’s surprise, Gimli doesn’t counter him with a sarcastic comment but just gives a hearty laugh at his elf-friend’s joke about his height.
8) The Mines of Moria

The mines of Moria provided the most heartbreaking scenes in the first Lord of the Rings movie. Other than losing Gandalf, there was another reason for Gimli’s grief. Initially, he was pleased to go into the Mines of Moria as he wanted to see his cousin Balin. However, all of his hopes are dashed when he sees that the Orca and Trolls living in the place have killed his relatives, including his cousin Balin. The scene showcased a rare moment of Gimli's vulnerability.
9) Don't Tell The Elf!

In the second movie of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gimli asks Aragorn to toss him across a gap in the battle of Helm’s Deep. The scene is funny as in the first movie, Gimli the dwarf warrior had asked Aragorn not to toss him. The situation becomes more comedic when Gimli further requests Aragorn not to talk about the incident with Legolas, to which Aragorn agrees. The scene adds humor to the alarming and critical situation.
10) Give Me Your Name, Horse Master, And I Shall Give Ya Mine!

Gimli was a part of the fellowship and could also be an intimidating fellow when he wanted to. In the second Lord of the Rings movie, when Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli come in contact with the Rohirrim Horsemen, Gimli isn’t terrified of witnessing the warriors. When Eomar ( Karl Urban) asks them about their identity, Gimli gives it back in an amused and sarcastic tone, asking him to tell his name first. This shows Gimli’s courage while confronting unknown threats.
