1. Sylvester Stalone – Rocky

Written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, Rocky is one of the most famous sports drama movies. The classic film about a small-time club fighter from Philadelphia, who goes on to fight for the world heavyweight championship, is one of the most famous stories about an underdog proving his mettle. How the movie got made is also a remarkable story. Stalone was broke and trying hard to get work in California. Devoid of any inspiration, he went to see a Muhammad Ali fight, and the idea for the movie struck him. The actor wrote the script for the film on his own and decided to show it to producers when he went to a casting call. He did not get the casting part, but the producers read his script and offered him $360,000 on the condition that someone other than Stalone would play the protagonist in the movie because they wanted a more famous name. However, the actor stayed adamant and wanted to star in the film because he would otherwise feel guilty if the movie became successful and he was not in it. The producers eventually relented and even gave him a $1m budget to make and act in the film. The rest is history, as Stallone became a megastar and the movie was nominated for nine Oscars and eventually won three.
2. Nia Vardalos – My Big Fat Greek Wedding

One of the most famous romantic comedies of the early aughts, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, is an iconic movie. Written by the protagonist, Nia Vardalos, the actress spoke about how she was rejected by multiple agents and managers because they did not like the scripts and believed that an actor should not write a movie. Even though Nia is herself Greek and knows about her culture, her writing was not accepted. However, Nia persisted and changed her script into a solo stage show. As luck would have it, her play was watched by Rita Wilson, who loved it and believed that it would make a fantastic movie. Rita helped Nia get all the resources and co-produced the film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, with her husband, Tom Hanks. Nia even got to star in her own film, and viewers and critics loved it for its authentic portrayal of Greek culture. The movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, spawned several sequels and was nominated for the Oscars.
