Christmas is almost here! And so are a customary list of holiday movies!
While people are always excited to celebrate this time by doing something new for every year, it is also the perfect time for snuggling in blankets amid biting winters and binge watching Holiday movies tailormade for the Holiday Season. OTTs have made it even better, because you don't have to wait for TV networks to air your favorite Holiday movies or go to the theatres to watch the new ones.
Each year, moviebuffs rewind to the Christmas classics, which have remained a fan favorite for ages. And yet, every year brings with it a couple of new Christmas movies with new themes reflecting the changing times. Regardless of what's trending, you will always find Christmas movies of every genre - romcoms, thrillers and even comedies. 2024 is no different.
Here's our list of 10 new Holiday movies to explore on OTTs:
Meet Me Next Christmas - Netflix
This one's a new twist on classic romcom movies with music, acapella and a throwback to the '00s! Christina Milian stars as Layla, a hopeless romantic, who is in a race against time to reach New York for the Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert. The problem? The concert is sold out. But, she needs to be there to meet someone. A story of long-distance love and reconnections, this one might be a relatable one for lovers living apart.
An Almost Christmas Story - Disney+
No Holiday movies list is complete without an animated movie and 2024 has one too. The only difference? This one is a short animation film about a young owl who is left, lost and alone after the tree in which it took shelter is destined to be replaced by the Rockefeller Center. Unable to find a home, it accidentally meets another lost being - a young girl called Luna - and forms a unique bond with her. A heartwarming film perfect for the Holiday Season, it features Jim Gaffigan and Natasha Lyonne among the voice cast.
Hot Frosty - Netflix
Now, this one's probably the most talked about movie on the Holiday movies list. Maybe because it will remind you of Mean Girls and Schitt's Creek. No, not because of the plot, but because of the cast. The movie stars Lacy Chabert and Dustin Milligan in a sweet story of second chances at happiness. But wait, its not your usual boy-meets-lonely-girl romcom. The twist is that the guy here is a snowman who has magically come to life. Since he is not a human, what happens to him when winters end? You need to watch it to know more.
Dear Santa - Paramount+
Come on, we all know no Holiday movies list is ever complete without a movie on Santa. But, this one's a different kind of spin on the image of Santa we all had (or have) as kids. Here, the Santa is kind of confused with Satan, or maybe its the other way round. A dyslexic boy makes a spelling error and the letter goes to Satan instead of Santa. The mighty Satan makes a visit and asks the boy for his soul in exchange for three wishes. What happens next is what you need to watch the thrilling movie for!
Our Little Secret - Netflix
This Christmas is all about reliving the 90s and the '00s, it seems. Lindsay Lohan is back with another feel-good movie with a little secret. Once again, it's Lohan keeping a secret from her family. But, this time she is joined by Ian Harding who plays her ex. Unfortunately, they have to spend their Holidays together because voila, their respective new partners turn out to be siblings. Determined not to ruin a family reunion and their new lives, the two have no option but to keep their past relationship a secret.
Nutcrackers - Hulu
Ben Stiller is back, and we can't keep calm!! Well, this time too he is playing an eccentric character and is out on a mission. Unfortunately, this mission involves being a caretaker of his newphews after they lose their parents to an accident. The problem is not that they are difficult to handle (of course!), but that there are four of them. And, he has to be with them during the Holiday Season. A difficult thing for a lifelong bacheler and a workaholic. You could guess who the Nutcrackers are, right?
The Merry Gentleman - Netflix
Missed watching Chad Michael Murray? Well, we have him here. And this time, he has taken things several notches up! He plays an exotic dancer who decides to help the protagonist Ashley (played by Britt Robertson) save her parents' business. How can an exotic dancer do that? Well, they plot an all-male, Christmas-themed revue just to bring audiences back to her family-owned performing venue. The movie has raked up some controversy because of its supposed adult theme and content. However, the actors are reassuring audiences of its heart in the right place among Christmas spirit.
Sweethearts - Max
This one's more of a Thanksgiving release than a Christmas one, but it sure has its heart in the right place. A coming-of-age teen drama, Sweethearts is a story of two college freshmen who decide to break up with their respective high school sweethearts the night before Thanksgiving. They conjure up elaborate plans and term it "Drunksgiving" and "Turkey Dump", but things take a slightly chaotic turn. Written and directed by Jordan Weiss, this one can be a good starter to Holiday movies bingewatch.
That Christmas - Netflix
Animated movies always take the centerstage in Holiday movies list. And this one also has Santa Claus, who is not perfect! Not even close. Directed by Simon Otto, the movie premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and is scheduled for an early December Netflix release. Its a hilarious take on tales of family, friends, love and loneliness that get entangled when a terrible snowstorm hits their small town. What's more? Santa too ends up getting caught in it. How does he stick to his Christmas duties then? Watch to find out!
Carry-on - Netflix
Again, a slight difference from other movies on the list, this one's a thriller set around the Christmas day. A young TSA agent is being blackmailed by a sinister traveler to bypass a mysterious package on to a flight slated for the Christmas Day. Sensing a major security breach, the TSA agent Ethan (played by Taron Egerton) tries to stop the dangerous package from entering the flight. But, escaping the blackmail is harder than what he anticipated. Watch it if a thrilling adventure does it for you this Christmas.
There you have it! Here's wishing you a happy Holiday Movies bing-watch.
