One cannot deny that the wizarding world of Harry Potter is filled with not just magic but mythical creatures as well. These magical creatures bring out the essence of the Harry Potter series. It is true that with the limited time that movies have, adding details about mythical creatures becomes difficult. Many mythical creatures in the movies have received very short screen time or have received mere mentions.

Though the storyline never disappointed, the lack of a deeper exploration of the mythical creatures was felt in the movies by the readers. However, in the upcoming TV series by HBO, a deeper delve into these creatures would make the show even more entertaining. The episodic format of the show would be a great opportunity to bring back these mythical creatures with proper accuracy from the books.

So in this list, let's dive into 10 mythical creatures we want to see in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV show.

1) Boggart

Boggarts are mythical creatures that we can see in the movie Harry Potter and The Prisoner Of Azkaban when Professor Lupin takes the class. Professor Lupin says that the Boggarts are creatures that can shapeshift. These creatures can shapeshift into whatever their opponent is most scared about.

For instance, in the movie we see the Boggart take the shape of Professor Snape when it faces Neville, when Ron faces the Boggart it shifts into one of his biggest fears, a spider, and when Harry faces the Boggart it turns into a dementor. They can be combated using a spell. It will be great to see this creature in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter TV show as it will add humor and also depict the fears of the students.

2) Three-headed dog

Harry Potter movies are filled with fascinating creatures that are both scary and intriguing. Hagrid’s beloved three-headed dog, Fluffy is one of the most interesting mythical creatures that we see in the movies. He is a fierce and loyal creature. Fluffy might look extremely scary but he has a weakness. He falls asleep when music plays.

In the movie Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone we see Fluffy guarding a door in the forbidden area of the third floor. Harry, Hermione, and Ron nearly got themselves killed when Fluffy woke up while they were inside the room. Viewers have noted that adding this three-headed dog to the new series would be a great decision.

3) Hippogriff

Another great addition to the Harry Potter TV series would be Buckbeak, the hippogriff. We first see Buckbeak in the movie Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban during a class that Hagrid takes. Hagrid informs the students that hippogriffs are very proud creatures and are easily offended. He adds that before touching Buckbeak they must bow back.

This stunning creature would be a majestic addition to the new HBO series. His story and his loyalty would be great to watch again. HBO could also explore new facets of Buckbeak’s nature while also staying true to the source. It would be a wonderful way to honor the legacy of Buckbeak.

4) Acromantula

This beloved giant spider species would be a great addition to the new HBO Harry Potter series. We see Aragog the arcomantula in the first movie of Harry Potter when Harry and Ron go to the Forbidden Forest to find answers about the Chamber of Secrets. Hagrid informed them that they would get answers if they followed the spiders into the forest. The spiders led to the nest of Aragog, an acromantula that Hagrid cared for.

The acromantula told Harry and Ron about his relationship with Hagrid. It showed that these dangerous creatures were also capable of loyalty and friendship. Though things took an unexpected turn from there, Aragog’s addition to the new series would be a great decision. Exploring more about Aragog’s friendship with Hagrid when he was young would add a layer of intrigue to the story.

5) Dragon

Dragons have been a crucial part of the Harry Potter franchise from the very first Harry Potter movie where we see Hagrid hatching a dragon's egg and a Norwegian Ridgeback coming out to the dragon helping Harry, Ron, and Hermione escape Gringott in Deathly Hallows. One of the moments that left a lasting impact on the viewers is when we see the dragons during the first task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Harry struggling to get the egg from the Hungarian Horntail is truly one of the most memorable moments of the movie Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire. Throughout the movies, we see many types of dragons. Exploring the dragons as a major plot point would be a great addition. According to Hagrid, dragons are seriously misunderstood creatures, and seeing these creatures again on the screen in a different light is a desire of all Potterheads.

6) Thestral

Yet another magnificent mythical creature from the Harry Potter series is Thestral. Thestrals are a breed of winged horses and a skeletal body. One of the most unique features about thestrals is that they can only be seen by people who have seen death.

Hence when we are first introduced to thestrals in the movie Order Of The Phoenix we see them pulling the carriage, Hermione, Ron, and Neville are not able to see them but Harry and Luna can. The association of death with the thestrals often makes them misunderstood and feared. The HBO series could use this opportunity to bring these mythical creatures back to the screen and capture their unique beauty. It would be a valuable addition to the series.

7) Centaur

When we first see these majestic creatures in the first movie when Harry and Malfoy go to the Forbidden Forrest, a centaur saves Harry’s life. These are half human and half horses which gives them a distinct appearance and abilities. They are wise creatures and are usually seen in packs.

We also see centaurs in the movie Order of The Phoenix when Hermione leads Dolores Umbridge to the forest and the centaurs attack her. As the moves did not properly delve into the centaurs it would be great to watch the centaurs with a deeper storyline in the HBO reboot. The culture and traditions of the centaurs, how they helped Dumbledore, and their respect for him.

8) Unicorn

This is yet another significant mythical creature in the Harry Potter series. We see a unicorn only in the first Harry Potter movie when Harry goes to the Forbidden Forest and finds Voldemort drinking the unicorn blood. The centaur that saved Harry tells him that the unicorn’s blood has healing powers that can save people even when they are an inch from death.

However, whoever drinks the unicorn’s blood receives only a half-life or a cursed life. As these mythical creatures were not properly delved into, a deep exploration of these rare creatures in the HBO reboot would be great to see.

9) Dementor

Dementors play a significant part in the Harry Potter franchise. From their first appearance in the movie Prisoner of Azkaban where a dementor attacks Harry on the train to Hogwarts to their role as the guards of Azkaban prison, dementors have been denoted as foul creatures.

The dementors sucked on the human soul which caused their victims to be left in a vegetative state. They also drain the person’s happiness and thrive on the grief of that person. A kiss of a dementor was one of the highest forms of punishment as we get to see in the movie Prisoner Of Azkaban. These terrifying and powerful creatures connect the theme of mental health and trauma in the series. An addition of the dementors in the HBO reboot of Harry Potter would be a great addition.

10) Troll

There is no denying that the troll was one of the most memorable creatures in Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone. When Hermione was in the girls' restroom, the troll that escaped from the dungeons entered there. She was almost about to get killed when Harry and Ron saved her.

This scene was humorous and memorable and made this creature a significant part of nostalgia. However, the movie was released in the early 2000s so the CGI was not as developed as the later movies. The reappearance of the trolls with better technology in the HBO reboot would be a great addition to the series.
